Jaws 2

Cast: Roy Scheider, Lorraine Gary, Murray Hamilton, Jeffrey Kramer and Ann Dusenberry.

Director: Jeannot Szwarc

Release Date: 1978

Running Time: 1hr 56 minutes

Genre: Thriller

Rating: 12

Format: Amazon Prime UK

Synopsis:

When a monstrous shark begins to terrorize Amity Island, Police Chief Brody must do everything he can to protect the citizens living there.

Forty-two years ago director Steven Spielberg delivered one of the best thrillers of all time, Jaws! Due to the success of the first film, it's only natural that director Jeannot Szwarc would try and make a sequel that could potentially, live up to the same standards. When a diver's camera is dug up from an abandoned cruiser and a water skier is killed. Police Chief Brody suspects the killer to be a great white shark. Determined to help he, sets off to prove to the town council that they once again have a killer shark on their hands.

Unfortunately, the storyline isn't as thrilling as it is in the first film. Director Steven Spielberg was very clever when he chose not to show the shark to his audience until almost an hour into the film, this added a tremendous amount of suspense and fear. Roy Scheider returns as Police Chief Brody, it appears four years have passed since the events of the last film. Chief Brody has been awarded for his efforts in 1975. Scheider once again, delivers a very strong performance, unlike the story in the first film, Mayor Vaughn (Hamilton) refuses to believe that Amity Island has another shark terrorizing their tourists. Chief Brody must prove through a series of photographs that he is right.

Chief Brody's two sons also return, much older this time, thought to be in their early to late teens. Mike Brody has got a keen eye for sailing and for picking up girls. Mike and his friends soon find themselves in trouble when they are stranded and circled by the monstrous shark. Realistically a great white shark wouldn't attempt to attack anything bigger than itself. The idea that it goes after several sailing boats is somewhat unrealistic. Realistically the film doesn't work as a sequel, audiences were introduced to the shark in the first film, unfortunately you can't recreate that incredible feeling of suspense and fear that was built up in the first movie, where the shark was shown for the first time.

Unfortunately the shots used make some scenes very predictable and because of that they really lack excitement. The use of aerial shots has to some degree, been overused. The audience are fully aware that the story takes place on an island. The editing is very poor at times, some scenes even look unfinished due to this mishap. Although a lot of effort went into making it a good sequel, sadly it was nowhere near upto the standards of Spielberg's classic.

Jaws

Cast: Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, Robert Shaw and Lorraine Gary.

Director: Steven Spielberg

Release Date: 1975

Running Time: 2hrs 4 minutes

Genre: Thriller

Rating:  12

Format: Blu-Ray

Synopsis:

On Amity Island a small community rely on their beaches to bring in the tourists however, when new Sheriff Martin Brody finds the remains of a shark attack victim, his first choice of course is to close the beaches, naturally this doesn't sit well with Mayor Larry Vaughn, so it's decided that perhaps the shark should be caught, before it does anymore killing, Marty Brody turns to marine biologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and a fishermen Quint (Robert Shaw) for his help, lets just say not everything goes as planned! Prepare for the thrills!

Based on Peter Benchley's best selling novel of the same name, Spielberg brings us one of the best thrillers of the 1970's! It's hard to believe when this film was in production that Steven Spielberg wasn't a very well known director at all, and ironically actually took over the job of another director, as the production team didn't feel like the film was convincing enough. Spielberg was that man! I think it's safe to say it was probably a wise choice as "Jaws" has gone onto be one of the best selling thrillers of the past forty two years! Spielberg has come incredibly far with his career since making this film, however it's still to this date one of his best pieces of work. Despite Spielberg cutting a lot of scenes from the book, I think it worked out for the best and appealed a lot more to audiences. The screenplay was very well written and the dialogue is great and very convincing.

Starring Roy Scheider as Chief Brody, Brody is the Chief of Police on Amity Island where he lives with his wife Ellen (Lorraine Gary) and their two boys, Michael and Sean. Originally from New York, Brody is still getting used to the island when the attacks start happening, just in time for the fourth of July. The acting in this film is really really good, Scheider is absolutely brilliant as the Chief of Police, he fits into the role perfectly and comes across as very convincing. Brody seems to be the only character at first that's convinced a shark is due to the attacks, Mayer Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) isn't so convinced and seems to care more about the money the town will make, then closing the beaches down for safety. It's become apparent that Brody is scared of the water, originally not allowing his son to go out on his first boat and refusing to go swimming in the sea. It's a shame Spielberg never gave us the backstory to that.

As the attacks get more and more frequent Brody highers a marine biologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) to come in to identify the shark. Dreyfuss is absolutely wonderful as Hooper, he brings fantastic characterization to his role and at times come across as very amusing, his relationship with Quint, is very rough, however Brody and Hooper seem to have more of an understanding and have great chemistry on screen together. Quint has a very interesting role in this film as a Fishermen who wants the shark all for himself including $10,000. Robert Shaw is great as Quint, rumour has it a lot of his lines were improvised however you will find yourself hating his character. He does however come across as very convincing, you can practically feel the tension oozing from the screen.

The film certainly doesn't take long to get going and gets straight to the point extremely fast with an attack in the opening scene, gripping audiences from the get go. It's beautifully shot and looks even better on Blu-Ray. Bill Butler has clearly done an amazing job as director of photography, the camera work in this movie is excellent, there's a wonderful dolly zoom when an attack has taken place, and the camera is very quickly zoomed in on Brody who is sat on the beach with his wife. Spielberg has also chosen to do a lot of close ups of the main actors, The editing at times is a little bit choppy, but the majority of the film is very smooth. Spielberg has also managed to catch some beautiful shots at night too, that look fantastic on screen. There are a few fantastic moments where the camera has used low angles to capture underwater scenes, allowing the film to build tension, is the shark going to attack? Or are we waiting for a jump scare? There's a wonderful low angle shot where tourists panic on the beach, I love how Spielberg was able to catch such realism. I love the fear in people that Spielberg was able to capture so beautifully on screen.

The production department have done a great job, the film is set in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, they've managed to capture some gorgeous beach scenery. Quint's boat in particular is a work of art, it's very realistic, I love the rustic feel the production department have given it and the wonderful name of "The Orca" it suits the character of Quint perfectly! Quint's home or office as it were is great too, I particularly love how the prop department went to great effort to show shark teeth hanging up and fishing nets strung around the room. It's exactly how I expect a fishermen's house/boat house to look. It shows a lot of realism and authenticity. The production department also went to a lot of effort to show Matt Hooper's fishing rods, oxygen tanks, diving gear. The special effects are great and are very convincing, it's hard to believe that they shark seen on screen is just mechanical, there are some truly terrifying close ups, that would convince you otherwise. I'm blown away with how realistic it looks. It's hard to believe this film was produced in 1975, it looks absolutely stunning on Blu-Ray, no grain and great surround sound.

John Williams has composed one of the most famous film scores in movies in history! The most beautiful thing about a film score is that it should allow you to feel what you are watching on the screen! The music gets faster and harder the closer the shark gets to the victim. It really is one of the most amazing soundtracks you'll ever be subjected to! Beautiful moments shared between a father and his son, the music is mellow beautiful. At the end of the film, they're on this ferocious journey to kill this shark before it takes the life of anymore victims...its intense, it's thrilling, then suddenly....it just mellows. You really do go on a journey with this film and the incredible soundtrack allows you do that.

Blu-Ray Special Features:

Deleted Scenes:

I don't know about you, but I love watching deleted scenes. The director has chosen to take out scenes for a reason, either they don't like them or they didn't work or they drag the film down, it's fascinating to see how the film could have been different. As a member of the audience the deleted scenes worked being left out of the film. They're boring and they would of dragged the film down.

The making of Jaws: 2hr Documentary:

A fascinating documentary with the filmmakers and author Peter Benchley, I love how we're introduced to each of the actors who played each character. Steven Spielberg brings us a wonderful insight into the making of one of his biggest films. Everything from casting the actors, the production design, filming underwater scenes getting real footage of sharks as you will see in certain scenes in the movie. Fascinating documentary!

From the Set:

A nice little eight minute segment on the filming of Jaws! The press follow them round during filming, interviewing Steven Spielberg. Press release.

The Impact and Legacy of Jaws:

A more up to date documentary on the film, explaining a bit more into detail about what happened when the movie was released, the issues they had with the shark during production, showing the movie's popularity around the world, a very interesting documentary.

Jaws: The Restoration:

Showing you how they essentially made the Blu-Ry, a pretty cool thing to watch! Remarkable watching them clean up a film for Blu-Ray. The process is long and a serious amount of attention to detail takes place.

The Dark Tower

Cast: Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey, Tom Taylor, Dennis Haysbert and Claudia Kim.

Director: Nikolaj Arcel

Release Date: 2017

Running Time: 1hr 35 minutes

Genre: Fantasy

Rating: 12

Synopsis:

Gunslinger Roland Deschain has been locked in an never ending battle with Walter O'Dim, commonly known as the Man in Black. Determined to stop him from toppling the Dark Tower which holds the Universe together. In a battle of good and evil, with the world at stake, Roland must do everything he can to stop the Man in Black.

Based on seven novels by Stephen King in The Dark Tower series. Jake Chambers (Taylor) believes that his visions are explaining the reason behind the earthquakes on Earth, believing that the The Dark Tower is under attack. Forced to run from home when people from The Dark Universe chase him, Jake seeks out to find the truth behind his visions, travelling through a porthole in the process. The problem with the storyline is the lack of understanding in not knowing where exactly the story takes place in the book series. The man in black is someone who can manipulate others actions. Force them to stop breathing, make them invision evil.

Director Nikolaj Arcel would of really benefited from making the films in order. The idea to push all seven books into one movie was a risky move. For those who have no read the novels will find themselves severely lost as to what is actually happening in the story. It's unfortunate that Stephen King's imagination is not captured the way it should be on screen. To capture the imagination of such a powerful author you need to be sharp in the film process, ideally not mixing the stories together, that were originally intended to be separate. Is it a coincidence that Jake can shine too, just like Danny in Stephen King's novel The Shining? Are the two thought to be set in the same universe?

Newcomer Tom Taylor stars as Jake Chambers, a young boy who can shine and see across worlds. Taylor delivers a seemingly good performance, although not a lot of characterisation is shown. McConaughey's performance as the man in black/Walter is very wooden, for such a talented actor it's really quite disappointing. There's no depth to his character. Idris Elba delivers the strongest performance in the film as gunslinger Roland. Both Elba and McConaughy had serious potential with their characters if it hadn't been for their poor direction. The special effects are poor and look incredibly messy on screen. The visual effects lack excitement and don't enforce an ounce of suspense. The story really had the potential to be huge, however due to poor direction and visuals the film was poorly let down.

The Nutty Professor

Cast: Eddie Murphy, Jada Pinkett, James Coburn, Larry Miller, Dave Chappelle and John Ales.

Director: Tom Shadyac

Release Date: 1996

Running Time: 1hr 36 minutes

Genre: Comedy

Rating: 12

Format: Sky Cinema

Synopsis:

Insecure yet good-hearted Professor Sherman Klump takes a special chemical that turns him into a slim and obnoxious man Buddy Love.

Fifty-four years ago Jerry Lewis jumped onto our screens in "The Nutty Professor", a story about a nerdy professor who takes a posion that temporarily turns him into an obnoxious ladies man. In 1996, Eddie Murphy took to our screens in this hilarious remake. Professor Sherman Klump invents an magnificent weight-loss solution that temporarily turns him into his obnoxious alter ego Buddy Love. Despite losing 250 pounds, his alter ego and arrogance soon spiral out of control. The storyline is very similar to the one in the smash hit movie "The Mask" starring Jim Carrey. In "The Mask" Stanley Ipkiss wore a green mask that turned him into an hia alter ego. An eccentric and animated clown.

Jerry Lewis reportedly turned down a cameo in the film, due to his personal beliefs expressing dissatisfaction at the amount of fart jokes used. Considering the humour that Lewis used to express in his younger years, it came as a surprise that we would not see the original Nutty Professor make a cameo. The humour used throughout the film is very tongue in cheek and should by no means be taken seriously. The story is funny because of it's ludicrosity. Eddie Murphy not only stars as Sherman Klump but also as Buddy Love, Lance Perkins, Papa Klump, Mama Klump, Grandma Klump and Ernie Klump. Murphy's art of characterisation for each character is absolutely outstanding. A different emotion, a different facial expression is shown in each and every character.

The storyline holds a strong message about not being afraid to be yourself, that beauty is found within and to believe in yourself, anything is possible. Although very different to the original film, the modern twist works well with the characters and the story. Jada Pinkett-Smith stars as Sherman's stunning love interest, Carla Purty. Jada Pinkett-Smith shows a lot of emotion through her eyes as Curly, you can really see the hurt in her eyes when Sherman is being made fun of in the nightclub by the comic. Her eyes really light up when she is with him, a fantastic performance is shown by Pinkett. A lot of work hasn't gone into the film to make it look fantastic visually, however the storyline and the characters certainly make up for it. Highly entertaining and fun.

The Bourne Ultimatum

Cast: Matt Damon, Julia Stiles, Scott Glenn, David Strathairn, Albert Finney and Joan Allen.

Director: Paul Greengrass

Release Date: 2007

Running Time: 1hr 55 minutes

Genre: Action

Rating: 12

Format: Sky Cinema

Synopsis:

Jason Bourne must dodge a ruthless CIA operative and his agents from a new assassination programme while searching for the origins of his life as a trained killer.

Trained killer Jason Bourne (Damon) is still desperately trying to find the answer to his identity. Bourne goes on the run when he learns London reporter Simon Ross is trying to unveil Operation Blackbriar, an significant upgrade to Treadstone. CIA Deputy Director Noah Vosen (Stratheim) wants him dead, however CIA Deputy Director Pamela Landy (Allen) is doing everything she can to keep him alive.  Meanwhile Jason attempts to track down Madrid based CIA station chief Neil Daniels (Stinton) who may just hold the answer to his real identity.

Ideally if you are relatively new to the franchise, it would pay to watch the films in order, otherwise particular scenes including flashbacks from the two previous films won't make an awful lot of sense,  director Paul Greengrass goes into a lot of detail in this film about what initially happened to Bourne,  detailing the events that took place in the first film. Paul Greengrass has taken the same approach as he did in the previous film with choosing to shoot the film in documentary style. Although this technique does add a dramatic effect to the film, it can be difficult to see what is going on too. It does, however give the film a sense of realism.

As the story progresses, Bourne really starts to remember his past and who he is in a series of flashbacks. The storyline is exciting and enticing, leaving you on the edge of your seat with a feeling of fear and suspense. The storyline almost feels like a puzzle to some degree, what is it they are searching for? The fact that questions aren't answered straight away is excellent. It allows you to keep wondering, keep figuring out what is actually going on. Bourne wants revenge and will do everything he can to get to Daniels. It becomes clear that Bourne doesn't trust anyone.

The idea to use little to no special effects has worked surprisingly effectively. Action sequences look real and genuine. The editing is very sharp and clean. Unlike other action movies "The Bourne Trilogy" certainly look the most real and effective, the film really deserved the Academy Award win. The stunt sequences are spectacular. The stunt sequences have been remarkably choreographed. Damon shows raw talent in his performance and his action sequences. An extremely well put together film, one that director Paul Greengrass should most certainly be proud of.

The Bourne Supremacy

Cast: Matt Damon, Franka Potente, Brian Cox, Julia Stiles and Karl Urban

Director: Paul Greengrass

Release Date: 2004

Running Time: 1hr 43 minutes

Genre: Action

Rating: 12

Format: Sky Cinema

Synopsis:

Jason Bourne finds himself being framed by a CIA operation gone awry. he is forced to resume his former life as a trained assassin to survive.

Based on the novel of the same name by American author Robert Ludlam. Director Paul Greengrass delivers the next installment in the action packed franchise. Jason Bourne and Maria are now in hiding in Goa, India. It doesn't however, take Treadstone long to hunt them back down. Jason soon finds himself on the run again when he is targeted for death by Russian assassin Kirill. Meanwhile back home, CIA Deputy Director Pamela Landy and CIA Chief Ward Abbott are desperately trying to bring him in...alive.

We begin to learn a lot more about Bourne, as he begins to remember more and more about his past. Matt Damon really shows fierce emotion in character, proving that he is a fighter and a soldier. He must do everything he can to survive. Unfortunately the storyline isn't quite as exciting as the first, it does however still really live up to the expectations of the first film as far as action sequences go. As far as book adaptations go, the storyline in the film is very different to the novel. Screenwriter Tony Gilroy has gone into far much more detail about Treadstone, understandably to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

Director Paul Greengrass has taken a much different approach in using hand held cameras to create an almost documentary effect. The director of photography has worked well with the lighting designers in choosing a muted colour palette to emphasise how dark the story is. The choice to use little to no computer graphics works excellently, fight and action sequences look more real and genuine. Audiences really have an opportunity to believe that what they are seeing, is actually real. Although the directing approach gives a more realistic feel to the film, it can be overwhelming at times too. Giving the impression that it's been very rushed.

It's unfortunate that we don't get to know the other characters better. We're introduced to several different characters, who have such little screen time that you start wondering who they actually are and what they actually have to do with the storyline. Despite the action sequences adding a lot of excitement to the film, it was very disappointing in comparison to the first film. However a good sequel, nonetheless.

The Bourne Identity

Cast: Matt Damon, Franka Potente, Chris Cooper, Clive Owen, Brian Cox and Josh Hamilton

Director: Doug Liman

Release Date: 2002

Running Time: 1hr 59 minutes

Genre: Action/Thriller

Rating: 12

Format: Sky Cinema

Synopsis:

Jason Bourne is found and picked up by a fishing boat, covered in blood and filled with bullets and finds himself suffering from severe amnesia, before racing to elude assassins and regain his memory.

Based on the book of the same name by American author Robert Ludlum. This is the first of four movies based on Ludlum's  novels. Jason Bourne is pulled from the Mediterranean sea by an Italian fishing boat. With no clue as to who he is, he is blood ridden and filled with bullets, with nothing to show but a pile of fake passports and a Swiss bank account number displayed by miniature laser disc found in his hip. It doesn't take long for him to realise that he is being hunted down by someone who wants to kill him. Bourne (Damon) must travel to Paris with friend Marie Kreutz to find clues about his identity and why he is being hunted down.

The storyline really has a sense of mystery to it. How is it that Jason Bourne has no memory? Why does he possess intense survival skills? Is Jason Bourne who he really is? When the men in Switzerland know his location they begin to hunt him down. There is an awful lot of character development, particularly between Jason and Maria. Damon delivers a very good performance, he really manages to keep quite a deadpan expression throughout the course of the film, a real look of confusion. He doesn't know who he is or where he came from, Damon really shows that emotion fantastically.

Action packed from beginning to end, not only is it exciting but really thrilling too, full of suspense and tension. Chris Cooper delivers a tremendous performance, like all of his roles he is really able to show emotion terrifically on screen, Cooper stars as Conklin one of many men hoping to hunt down and kill Jason Bourne. The story is essentially Jason's journey into finding who he is and where he came from. There are moments where you feel like there is a piece of the puzzle missing,  avid readers have mentioned how much more the novel goes into detail. Although it's very nicely shot there are a few editing issues, particularly at the beginning of the film, although it's not too obvious, it does take a little bit of the magic away from the story.

The action sequences have been very coherently shot, with the use of terrific cinematography and lighting, the scenes really come to life and look realistic. Director Doug Liman has heavily relied on action sequences to explain the story. These sequences are heavily chaotic, very much like the mind of Jason Bourne. Fast thinking and quick. Set in the heart of Paris, the city works really well with the storyline. Adding a real sense of mystery to the film and there whereabouts of Jason Bourne. A highly entertaining film, full of action and depth.

2012

Cast: John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Oliver Platt, Woody Harrelson and Danny Glover

Director: Roland Emmerich

Release Date: 2009

Running Time: 2hrs 31 minutes

Genre: Action

Rating: 12

Format: Sky Cinema

Synopsis:

A frustrated father struggles to keep his family alive when the world is thrust into a series of global catastrophes, forcing the planet to start over.

December 21st, 2012 marked the ending of the 13th cycle of the Mayan long count calendar. The Mayan calendar ends December 21st 2012. The beliefs suggested that the Mayans foretold the ending of the world at this time. Also this date was highly significant to Mayans, there is no evidence to prove that the world would cease to exist. In 2009, at the Institute of Astrophysics in India, Adrian Helmsley and Dr Satnam Tsurutani discover there has been a major solar flare, one that will push the planet into severe catastrophic proportions. Forcing himself to convince the President of the United States (Glover) that the world is coming to an end, the world must start preparing themselves by building arks in Tibet that will hopefully save mankind.

Unfortunately the problem arises with the storyline when it is mentioned that only the rich will survive and board the Arks. This is a very controversial move, in saying that the President's around the world would only choose to to save the rich and not the poor. As far as the storyline goes it's not really giving off the best image to audiences. Of course the storyline is not to be taken seriously, this of course is the beauty of film. It's unfortunate really that the concept is there, it's just been very poorly executed. Although the use of humour works quite well, it does sadly pull the storyline away from the catastrophic occurrences taking place. It'd be very easy to believe that "The Day after Tomorrow" and "San Andreas" are set in the same Universe as this one due to the storyline being so similar. The storyline sadly just isn't convincing.

It's embarrassing to know that the child actors deliver better performances than some of the more professional adult actors. John Cusack stars as single father and author Jackson Curtis, Curtis must do everything he can do get his family out of the country before it's too late. Forcing his ex-wife's boyfriend to fly them to China in the hope they can board the Arks. Although Cusack delivers a fairly good performance, it's a shame the same couldn't really be said for Amanda Peet and Tom McCarthy who play Kate Curtis and Gordon Silberman. Danny Glover however, does deliver a very strong performance as the President of the United States. Risking his own life to save others, he stays behind whilst his team board Air Force One.

The special effects really dominate the film, this of course makes sense seeing as it is of course a disaster movie. The problem however is that the special effects really don't look that fantastic. When the film has got a budget worth $200,000,000, it is a little bit disappointing to see special effects that in hindsight look so poor. For the most part, it feels like two and a half hours of fancy special effects, where is the depth to the storyline? The story gets lost in endless disaster scenes that are shared with poor character development. For a film that is set in December there are no references at all to the month throughout the course of the film. The score does absolutely nothing for the film or the action sequences, there is barely any sense of suspense or fear. This film really had the potential to be excellent, a huge disappointment.

Home Alone 3

Cast: Alex D. Linz, Olek Krupa, Rya Kihlstedt, Lenny Von Dohlen, David Thornton, Scarlett Johanson and Christopher Curry.

Director: Raja Gosnell

Release Date: 1997

Running Time: 1hr 42 minutes

Genre: Family

Rating: PG

Format: Sky Cinema

Synopsis:

A nine year old boy living in Chicago, defends himself from thieves who seek a top secret microchip inside his toy car to support a North Korean terrorist organization's next deed.

When a US Air Force missile microchip finds itself in the hands of eight year old Alex Pruitt, he finds himself having to defend his home when four high tech industrial spies come searching for it. Unbeknownst to Alex does he realise the chip is hiding inside a toy car that he was given as a gift. Ready to take action, along with his pet mouse Doris, he is more than prepared when they come looking for him. Directorial debut of Raja Gosnell, Gosnell proves that there is still some spark left in the "Home Alone" franchise in this highly entertaining sequel. However, unlike the first two movies, this story is in fact set after Christmas.

The disappointment hits audiences when they realise it is different from the two previous films. Different director. Different story. Different kid. This film was made purely to entertain, nothing else. Alex D. Linz has just as much if not more charm than Macaulay Culkin. Although the storyline is set in Chicago, the story takes place in a different street. Alex Pruitt finds himself home alone when he develops the chicken pox one night, furious that no one believes him when he witnesses several burglaries, he takes action into his own hands. Proving that he has just as many tricks up his sleeve as Kevin McCallister.

The storyline works well because it doesn't go into serious detail about who these people are. There's a certain amount of mystery to the characters that makes them a lot more interesting and it allows the story to keep in line with the family Christmas persona. The bad guys are what really make this story work. Beaupre, Alice, Jernigan and Unger, performed by four terrific actors, Olek Krupa, Rya Kihlstedt, Lenny Von Dohlen and David Thornton. Absolutely hilarious, they soon find themselves victim of Alex's booby traps. The film comes with a wonderful contemporary soundtrack including smash hit artists such as Oingo Boingo and Chuck Berry. Highly entertaining and full of fun.

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York

Cast: Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern, John Heard, Catherine O'Hara and Tim Curry.

Director: Chris Columbus

Release Date: 1992

Running Time: 2hrs

Genre: Family

Rating: PG

Format: Blu-Ray

Synopsis:

Kevin is back again, this time he accidentally finds himself lost in New York City and unfortunately for him the same criminals from last year are not far behind.

Chris Columbus's second installment into the "Home Alone" franchise is equally if not even more exciting then the first. Kevin McCallister finds himself lost in The Big Apple in the arms of the same two burglars who tried to rob his home in Chicago. Armed with cash and credit cards, Kevin finds himself having the trip of a lifetime. Director Chris Columbus admitted to essentially remaking the first film, this time setting it in New York City. Although the storyline may seem exactly the same, the characters are very different. The characters that Kevin interacts with are not only fantastically eccentric but wonderfully entertaining too. The storyline really has a magical spark to it.

Macaulay Culkin reprises his role as Kevin McCallister excellently. A little bit older and wiser he has a few more tricks up his sleeve for Marv and Harry. Both find themselves in New York City when they escape jail during a prison riot. No longer the wet bandits they are now the sticky bandits! Although lost and alone in New York City, Kevin makes friends along the way, a very kind pigeon lady who looks out for him in time of need, performed beautifully by actress Brenda Fricker. Most will be accustomed to seeing Joe Pesci in the likes of "Goodfellas" and "Lethal Weapon", however his comedic timing in both "Home Alone" films is truly wonderful. Daniel Stern and Joe Pesci are the ultimate comedy duo. Both prove that they are capable of serious and comedic roles.

Set in the heart of New York City, the setting simply adds even more magic to the movie. Showing the city in all it's glory. The production design again is very similar to the first, director Chris Columbus has really just used the same template for two different films. Although it doesn't sound original, it would surprisingly well. The gags set up for Marv and Harry are fantastically shot and for the most part are absolutely hilarious. Chris Columbus hasn't mist a beat when it comes to entertaining his audiences. The late screenwriter John Hughes has one again written a terrific film. John Williams delivers a tremendous soundtrack that adds heart and emotion to the film. Simply one of the best Christmas films ever made!

What would you do if you were eight years old and left at home on your own over the Christmas holidays? Eat whatever you want and do whatever you want of course! Kevin McCallister is performed excellently by Macaulay Culkin, Kevin is not your normal typical child, smart and mischievous he knows exactly how to defend himself against two moronic burglars.

The dimwitted robbers are performed magnificently by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern. Terrifically funny, the comic timing between both actors are what really makes their scenes so hilarious. Beautifully written the storyline will tug on your heartstrings at times, everyone's celebrating Christmas, Kevin however is having to defend for himself, when he should be at home with his family snuggled up around a Christmas tree. The story really emphasises the importance of family and spending time together, life is short to stay angry at someone. The real action however, begins when Harry and Marv break into the McCallister house, unbeknownst to them do they know it's armed with boobie traps, pet spiders and and a very protective neighbour.

It's miraculous to see how many traps Kevin sets up in such a short space of time, the action sequences are superb. How much pain can two burglars go through before they give up? It is during these scenes that you learn Harry and Marv's fears. Wonderfully executed, you'll find yourself laughing time and time again at their antics as they attempt to chase Kevin through his fun house. A wonderful ending to a terrific film, "Home Alone" is a film you can watch time and time again with your family, to really get you in the festive spirit.

Director: Franklin J. Schaffner

Release Date: 1968

Running Time: 1hr 47 minutes

Genre: Action/Sci Fi

Rating: PG

Format: Sky Cinema

Synopsis:

*may contain spoilers*

A space shuttle crew crash lands on a distant planet in the future where intelligent apes are the dominant species and humans are at the bottom of the food chain.

Based on the novel "La Planete des Singes" by French writer Pierre Boulle, shortly after it was translated into English by British writer Xan Fielding and named Monkey Planet. The idea that essentially our own species is living on a remote planet somewhere in the distant future is certainly an interesting prospect. US astronauts Taylor, Landon and Dodge have been travelling through space in hyper-sleep for eighteen months, they left Earth seven-hundred years ago, the year is now 3978. When their space shuttle crash lands on a remote planet they find themselves surrounded by intelligent apes who are now the dominant species.

Are they really on a remote planet? Or are they simply still on Earth? The theory is a pretty complex one. If they are to be on Earth, why were they travelling through space for over two thousands years? Did they reach a wormhole and comeback on themselves? Humans are treated like animals. The theory soon becomes confusing when we look at the recent "Planet of the Apes"franchise. Humans created a drug that caused the apes to become intelligent, so intelligent that the Apes took over Earth.  Human survivors in "War for the Planet of the Apes" were born mute, a characteristic that came with Simian Flu, a virus that wiped out humans. Is it possible that "Planet of the Apes" leads on from the latest hit "War for the Planet of the Apes"? The storyline is not only thought provoking but it's clearly been exceptionally well written.

Charlton Heston delivers a very interesting performance as astronaut George Taylor, stranded on the remote planet alone, he too finds himself a mute after being attacked by apes. The apes live within a community of doctors, psychologists and essentially zoo keepers. The idea that humans can talk and write baffles them. The relationships between the apes are very complex. Apes have become terrified of humans. The special effects are absolutely outstanding. The clever use of prosthetics are what really make the characters so fantastic, their mannerisms are excellent, allowing the actors to give an even more genuine performance. A terrific production design that falls audiences to the very end. Considering the time in which it was produced, this is exceptionally impressive.

A very disturbing and thought-provoking film, superb. A classic.

War for the Planet of the Apes

Cast: Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn, Ty Olsson and Terry Notary

Director: Matt Reeves

Release Date: 2017

Running Time: 2hrs 20 minutes

Genre: Action/thriller

Rating: 12

Synopsis:

After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles his darker instincts and begins his own quest to avenge his kind.

Fifteen years have passed since the events that first took place in "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes", Caesar and his army of apes are now at war with humans. After his wife and child are killed during battle, Ceasar embarks on a quest to find the murderous soldier who killed his family to seek vengeance. The apes are now fighting for survival to protect their own, to find a new home, to start over. Dark and gripping, director Matt Reeves carries on the story beautifully in this magnificent thriller. The more we see of the story, the more of an understanding we get on how dark "Planet of the Apes" really is!

Humans are being punished for what they have done, nature is fighting back. Magnificently written, the storyline is incredibly gripping and deeply emotional. Distinguished actor Andy Serkis delivers an outstanding performance as leader of the pact Caesar. The emotion that Serkis is able to deliver purely through eye contact is fantastic, not afraid to stand up for himself or others he becomes a threat to The Colonel, performed excellently by Woody Harrelson. The use of humour hasn't gone amissed, director Matt Reeves has incorporated it into scenes just enough to lighten the mood, without tearing away from the gripping storyline.

The spectacular visuals are what really make this film stand out from similar films of the same idea. Set in British Columbia, Canada, the scenery works excellently, up in the snowy mountains, it really gives the story some depth, a real sense of isolation. The special effects are what really make this film come together with the use of a beautifully composed score by Michael Giacchino. Uplifting and emotional it really tells the story as the film progresses. Far more intense than the  previous films, humans are not only at war with apes, but at war with themselves, humans have become selfish and controlling, controlling their own kind as well as apes. A terrific end to a franchise, is the story really over though?

Spectacular and thrilling.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Cast: Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell and Terry Notary

Director: Matt Reeves

Release Date: 2014

Running Time: 2hrs 10 minutes

Genre: Action

Rating: 12

Synopsis:

A growing army of genetically intelligent apes led by Caesar are threatened by a group of human survivors, of a devastating virus that was unleashed a decade before.

A decade has passed since the events that first took place in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes", the planet is now at war with dominating apes. Set in 2026, humans are dying of a deadly virus known as Simian Flu, affecting up to 150,000,000 people. A virus that is thought to have spread through the ALZ-112 drug that was originally given to a chimpanzee Bright Eyes. Caesar and his army of apes now dominate the world with only a few human survivors remaining. Humans must now do everything they can to keep peace and survive. The idea of apes ruling the world is a pretty terrifying prospect. It takes us back to essentially, the beginning of time, when humans first evolved.

The storyline is exceptionally dark, although the original films were excellent due to real people playing apes, the CGI makes it miraculously genuine and terrifyingly convincing. Humans are now at the bottom of the food chain, ruled by apes. The apes are not only at war with humans in fighting for survival but at war with themselves. Although the storyline has been brilliantly written, the decision to leave out subtitles during the apes conversations with each other, sadly allow audiences to get lost in the loop of communication. Understanding what was being said really would of given a sense of fear and suspense. It does however add a sense of mystery too, which builds a decent amount of suspense up as the story unfolds.

Jason Clarke unfortunately delivers a very unconvincing performance as Malcolm. The understanding that himself and others have lost their families to this awful virus, don't seem to be on the verge of survival but more an understanding as time has passed by. Despite a decade passing, the film sadly doesn't explain what has happened between the events that first took place in the first film. How is it that they are the only remaining survivors? How are they genetically immune? Almost as if a piece of the puzzle is missing. Hopefully the next film with have a few more answers. Sadly we don't see much from the other characters or an understanding of their background. A little bit disappointing and sadly nowhere near as exciting as the first.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Cast: Andy Serkis, James Franco, Karin Konoval, Terry Notary, Christopher Gordon, Tom Felton and Brian Cox.

Director: Rupert Wyatt

Release Date: 2011

Running Time: 1hr 44 minutes

Genre: Action

Rating: 12

Synopsis:

A substance designed to help the brain repair itself, gives rise to a super intelligent chimpanzee who leads an ape uprising.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a prequel and a reboot of the original series starting with "Planet of the Apes", it's a shame there have been so many remakes over the years, audiences more often than not find themselves lost in the loop of where the story begins and where it continues. Dr Will Rodman (Franco) believe he has found a cure for Alzheimer's disease, in a drug called C-12. Although the drug proves to be effective at first, he soon learns that the human body has found a way to fight back. After his mother is killed trying to protect him, Caesar is born with exceptional intelligence, potentially making him dangerous to humans. Determined to escape a cruel prison, Caesar enlists the other apes to help him in an uprising.

The storyline unfortunately isn't very original. It's very similar to the story in the hit action film "Deep Blue Sea" where doctors desperately try to find a cure for Alzheimer's disease by testing drugs out on sharks which term them abnormally intelligent. Although the premise behind the story was very well thought out, sadly director Rupert Wyatt delivers a very poorly executed film. James Franco stars as Dr Will Rodman, after living with his ill father he does everything he can to find a cure for Alzheimer's, looking after Caesar in the process. John Lithgow and James Franco work fantastically well on screen together as father and son. A connection many of us can empathise with.

Despite his terrific role in "Harry Potter", Tom Felton delivers one of his worst performances as Dodge landon, delivering a shocking American accent and very little characterisation as he tries to take control at the prison. The animation looks magnificent, very different to the original film, where actors played the apes, the animation allows for the apes to look and act more realistic and genuine in their mannerisms. Unfortunately the story takes it's fair share of time to get going, the action however is very coherently shot and looks excellent on screen. Entertaining, full of suspense, a good start to a new series.

101 Dalmatians

Cast: Rod Taylor, J.Pat O'Malley, Betty Lou Gerson, Martha Wentworth, Ben Wright, Lisa Davis and Cate Bauer

Director: Clyde Geronimi and Hamilton Luske

Release Date:  1961

Running Time: 1hr 16 minutes

Genre: Animation

Rating: U

Format: DVD

Synopsis:

When a load of dalmatian puppies are stolen by the minions of Cruella De Vil, the parents must find them before she uses them as a fur coat.

Fifty-six years ago Walt Disney Studios released one of its most beloved masterpieces "101 Dalmatians", set beautifully in the heart of London. I have a confession. This was one of my favourite animations as a child, I even had all the merchandise to go with it. One afternoon whilst taking his dog Pongo for a walk, Roger finds himself tangled up with a beautiful young woman Anita to whom he falls in love with and marries. Six months later, Anita's gorgeous dalmatian Perdita is expecting puppies, little do Roger and Anita know that evil Cruella De Vil wants them for herself to make a fur coat out of them. Pongo and Perdita must do everything they can to be reunited with their puppies before it's too late.

Although the storyline sounds nothing short of terrifying, the film does have a wonderful ending. It'd be easy to assume a film about a bunch of gorgeous puppies, the puppies would naturally steal the show? Of course they do, but the two main characters that are wonderfully hilarious in their antics are Jasper and Horace, responsible for stealing the puppies. The story speaks of heartbreak, however it also speaks of love, courage and friendship. Betty Lou Gerson delivers a terrifying performance as evil Cruella De Vil. It's amazing how this never terrified me as a child. It's remarkable how differently you see things as a child, now an adult I can really see how dark Walt Disney intended it to originally be.

At fifty-six years the animation still looks excellent, the beauty of the animation is that it really allows you to get wrapped up in the magic. Terrific performances from Betty Lou Gerson, Rod Taylor and J. Pat O'Malley really allow the story to come to life in one of Walt Disney's most precious animations. A beautiful story that is certain to bring a tear to your eye! An absolute must have for any Disney fan.

Running Time: 1hr 47 minutes

Genre: Thriller

Rating: 15

Struggling to fit in at home and at school, he seeks the help of award winning child psychologist Dr Malcolm Crowe (Willis), in the hope that he can gain some control and understanding for his unusual gift. Director M Night. Shyamalan delivers one of the best films of 1999 in this magnificent thriller.

Bruce Willis stars as Dr Malcolm Crowe, awarded for his incredible effort in helping young children, he desperately tries to understand what's troubling young Cole. Malcolm Crowe meets with Cole on a weekly basis to help him understand his gift, helping him put it to good use. Haley Joel Osment delivers one of the best child performances of the decade with his incredible performance as Cole Sear. Struggling to come to terms with his gift, he gets badly bullied and ridiculed at school. The friendship that soon forms between Cole and Dr Malcolm Crowe is not only heartwarming but courageous for the both of them.

Award-winning actress Toni Collette delivers one of the best performances of her career as Lynn Sear. A single mother who is struggling to understand what is happening to her young child. Colette's performance is remarkably genuine and emotional. The emotion that Collette is able to show on screen is absolutely outstanding. M Night Shyamalan not only proves he is a worthy director but a terrific screenwriter. The storyline is tremendously thought-provoking and reaches out to you on a psychological and emotional level. Packed full of surprises, it certainly has it's fair share of unexpected jump scares.

The storyline is fantastically unique in showing horror without the use of gore or violence. One of very few movies to actually be filmed in sequence. Shyamalan has heavily relied on psychological responses from his actors to create real effects, although some special effects are apparent in the film, Shyamalan has relied more on the performance of his actors to create real suspense and fear. Beautifully edited with a haunting score, this is one film that M Night. Shyamalan should certainly be proud of. Thrilling and spectacular.

Running Time: 1hr 34 minutes

Genre: Comedy

Rating: PG

Jackie Chan has not only proved he's capable of producing terrific family films, he's also shown the world his remarkable martial arts skills. Gillian's (Valletta) three children don't like the idea of their mother dating Bob Ho (Chan), unbeknownst to her, Ho is a secret CIA agent. His biggest assignment however will be babysitting Gillian's three kids, things soon go wrong when one of the youngsters accidentally downloads a secret formula, causing Bob's enemy a Russian terrorist to visit the family. The mayhem that unfolds is fantastically cheesy and entertaining. Jackie Chan is an exceptionally unique talent, it's no surprise that actors jumped at the chance to work with him.

Despite the cheesy outline of the film. The storyline very nicely focuses on real life issues, broken families, divorce and the challenge of single parenting. The story is very toned down compared to Chan's normal action packed movies, allowing it to really appeal to family's and children of all ages. Jackie Chan is really quite remarkable to watch, excellently trained in Wu-Shu and Wing-Chun, Chan's stunts are beautifully choreographed. Nora, Ian and Farron really steal the show with their mayhem and antics, doing everything they can to trip Bob up.

Chan is wonderfully entertaining as Bob Ho, not only does he deliver terrific comic timing, he becomes the ultimate family man. Madeline Carroll, Will Shadley and Alina Foley all deliver excellent performances as Gillian's three children, Ian, Nora and Farron. Each of them work beautifully alongside Chan. Every great spy movie comes with a bad-ass bad guy. Katherine Boecher is excellent as Creel, who works alongside bad guy Glaze played fantastically by George Lopez. Chan makes his stunts look easy, the choreography is absolutely outstanding. Not to be taken too seriously, Chan once again delivers the perfect family film.

Mrs Doubtfire

Cast: Robin Williams, Sally Field, Peirce Brosnan, Lisa Jakub, Mara Wilson and Matthew Lawrence.

Director: Chris Columbus

Release Date: 1993

Running Time: 2hrs 5 minutes

Genre: Comedy

Rating: 12

Format: DVD

Synopsis:

After a bitter divorce, an actor disguises himself as a female housekeeper in order to spend more time with his children, who are held in custody by his former wife.

Twenty-four years ago, Robin Williams bounced onto our screens as the wonderfully charming and eccentric Euphegenia Doubtfire. On the night of his son's twelfth birthday, Daniel Hillard (Williams) realises he's gone a step too far with his wife's patience, resulting in her filing for divorce. Realising he has no job and no where to live, the court naturally places his three children Natalie (Wilson) Lydia (Jakubs) and Chris (Lawrence) in full custody of their mother. Determined to do everything he can to spend time with them he conjures up the wonderful idea of disguising himself as a female housekeeper, gaining employment by his ex-wife Miranda who has no idea.

Based on the children's book "Madame Doubtfire" by author Anne Fine. The storylne beautifully focuses on the difficulties that families have to face on a daily basis, divorce. Screenwriters Randi Mayem Singer and Leslie Dixon have added a perfect balance of humour and drama to the story. The late Robin Williams delivers one of his best performances as Daniel Hillard. Hilariously funny, William's comic timing is truly magnificent. The change of character that Williams is able to show is not only fantastic but exceptionally impressive. Divorce naturally isn't nice for anyone, however it can be even harder on children who don't understand what's going on, some children even blame themselves for their parents problems.

Mara Wilson stars as Natalie Hillard. Young and innocent she has no idea that her father is in disguise as Mrs Doubtfire, instead she finds herself mesmerised by Miranda's hunky new boyfriend Stu, performed brilliantly by Peirce Brosnan. Sally Field stars as Miranda Hillard an interior design who spends more time cleaning up after her husband then spending time with her family. Field's performance is not only realistic but terribly genuine. Brilliantly heartfelt, audiences will find themselves relating to her on all sorts of levels. Set in Robin Williams's real hometown of San Francisco, the setting really adds magic to the storyline.

An brilliantly entertaining soundtrack from the likes of House of Pain and Aerosmith, Chris Columbus once again proves he's capable of producing a terrific family film!

Director: Richard Linklater

Release Date: 2003

Running Time: 1hr 49 minutes

Genre: Comedy

Rating: PG

Format: Amazon Prime UK

Synopsis:

After Dewey Finn is kicked out of his rock band, he becomes a substitute teacher for a strict elementary school, hoping to turn his class into a rock band.

Dewey Finn (Jack Black) owes his flat mates $2200 in rent, his rock band has had enough of his stage dives and twenty minute solo's, after being threatened to get kicked out his flat and fired from his band. Dewey poses as his friend Ned as a 4th grade substitute teacher at a local Elementary school. Turning up to his first day at work with a hangover, his class aren't convinced. One day after having a sudden epiphany, he comes up with the great idea of starting a rock band with his class. Inspired by their talent he enters them into the Battle of the Bands. Jack Black is not to everyone's liking, however his characters often match his very eccentric personality perfectly. Brilliantly extroverted, Black is terrific as Dewey Finn.

The storyline focuses excellently on the importance of following our dreams. We all have hidden gifts and talents. The storyline is not only wonderfully entertaining but brilliantly inspiring. Although most of the child stars are relatively unknown, they all deliver great performances. The idea of a substitute teacher starting a rock band is a pretty interesting prospect. Not all children are naturally academic, some children will find their talents lay in a more creative field, such as music. Joan Cusack stars as the Principal of the school Rosaline Mullins. Cusack's character Mullins is close minded when it comes to experimental education. Music has not only been proven to be therapeutic, but proved to help people learn too.

The soundtrack to the film is tremendous. The score coincides with the storyline brilliantly, with big names like AC/DC, Kiss, The Who and The Clash. It's surprising that Jack Black's band Tenacious D didn't make an appearance. Fantastically directed by Richard Linklater and wonderfully written by Mike White. A terrific family film that will inspire children of all ages to follow their dreams. Wonderfully entertaining and funny. Jack Black delivers one of his best performances as Dewey Finn. An absolute must watch.

Son of the Mask

Cast: Jamie Kennedy, Alan Cumming, Traylor Howard and Steven Wright

Director: Lawrence Guterman

Release Date: 2005

Running Time: 1hr 34 minutes

Genre: Family/Comedy

Rating: PG

Format: Amazon Prime UK

Synopsis:

Aspiring cartoon artist Tim Avery finds himself in a pickle when his dog stumbles across the mask of Loki. However after conceiving a baby born of the mask, Tim discovers that raising a child can be a little bit challenging.

Jim Carrey bounced onto our screens back in 1994 with the smash hit movie "The Mask" directed by Chuck Russell. After the films initial success there were talks about a sequel being made, however when Carey refused the idea, a sequel was scrapped. This story is not to be mistaken for a sequel, it was originally made as an screenplay titled "Baby Formula" that was thought to have been inspired by "Rosemary's Baby" and "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and intended more for an adult audience. In the original film, we realise that the mask is in fact the mask belonging to the God of mischief Loki, brother of Thor and son of Odin.

One afternoon, Tim's Jack Russell Otis stumbles across a mask floating in a nearby river. Delivering it to his owner, with Halloween just around the corner, Tim decides to use the mask as part of his costume, turning him into a multicoloured clown. After his wife Tonya gives birth to their son, Tim is left alone with him whilst his wife heads to New York on a business trip, learning that looking after a child is a lot more challenging than he first anticipated. Jim Carrey had every right to turn down the sequel. Terribly directed by Lawrence Guterman, it's unsure what he was actually hoping to show his audience after production finished?

Not only is the storyline incredibly messy, but it was poorly executed too. Lawrence Guterman desperately tried to take all of the wonderful attributes from the first film and incorporate them into this storyline, needless to say he failed miserably. Although it has a very nice cartoonish feel to it, it's pretty obvious that it's inspiration came from "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", unfortunately it leaves no room for originality. You'd be lucky, if for the most part of the film you actually understand what is meant to be going on.  Unfortunately due to the storyline being so messy, the creativity that was placed in the production design goes completely unmissed. Jamie Kennedy's performance is almost as awful as the storyline. Alan Cumming is the only actor who actually has the potential to make the film brilliant.

A film that really had the potential to be something great, however due to poor choices made in early production, it turned out to an embarrassing mess.

Thor: Ragnarok

Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Mark Ruffalo and Jeff Goldblum

Director: Taika Waititi

Release Date: 2017

Running Time: 2hrs 10 minutes

Genre: Action/Fantasy

Rating: 12

Format: Theatrical Cinema Release

Synopsis:

Imprisoned, Thor finds himself in a gladiatorial contest against fellow Avenger Hulk. Thor must fight for survival and do everything he can to prevent his home from being destroyed.

Marvel have had a tremendous year with the incredible success of "Spider-Man: Homecoming", it was really no surprise that the next film in the universe would go onto be as good, if not even better. Two years have passed since the events that took place in the last film. After unsuccessfully searching for the infinity stones and being imprisoned by fire demon Satur. Thor (Hemsworth) and his brother Loki (Hiddleston) must embark on a journey to Norway to find their father Odin (Hopkins), Odin however explains that he is dying and that his firstborn child Hela (Blanchett), has escaped prison and has taken over Asgard, destroying everyone and everything in her path. Thor, with the help of avenger Hulk must travel through a wormhole to stop her before it's too late.

Fantastically directed by Taika Waititi and magnificently written by Eric Pearson, Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost. The storyline is what really makes this film excellent. Chris Hemsworth delivers excellent comic timing, Thor is no longer the narcissistic prince that he was in the first film, he has learnt to love and care and does everything he can to save the people of Asgard from Hola. Cate Blanchett is excellent as Hela, the Goddess of Death, giving her the rulership of the dead. Blanchette doesn't necessarily show a lot of emotion or characterisation, however she does perform very well in her role. Unfortunately Jeff Goldblum was a little bit disappointing, not only do we not see a lot of his character, his performance wasn't that good, although he looked the part, he didn't act the part.

The arena in which Thor must fight Hulk, is amazing on it's own. The idea to have a reference to "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" was absolutely excellent. Not only does it add humour to the scene, it works brilliantly alongside the storyline and the world that Thor finds himself entering. A neon infused planet that looks like it'd be more suitable for the likes of  "Ready Player One", than a Marvel film, however it really does work beautifully. Director Taika Waititi really worked well with cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe and production designers Dan Hennah and Ra Vincent, they really created an excellent fantasy world. Marvel have once again delivered a magnificent film. Trilogy's don't always work, in this case it really did, hilariously funny and wonderfully entertaining.

The Mummy (2017)

Cast: Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis and Jake Johnson

Director: Alex Kurtzman

Release Date: 2017

Running Time: 1hr 50 minutes

Genre: Fantasy

Rating: 15

Synopsis:

An ancient Egyptian princess, Ahmanet is awakened from her sarcophagus, beneath the desert, bringing with her evil grown of millenia and plagues that are beyond human comprehension.

The story begins in 1127 A.D, multiple English crusader knights, bury an Egyptian ruby within the sarcophagus of one of their people. In the New Kingdom era, Princess Ahmanet (Boutella) is first in line to take the throne from her father, until his second wife gives birth to a son. Determined to steal the throne for herself, the Egyptian God of Death agrees to help her if she uses a mystical dagger, known as the dagger of set to help him transform his spirit into a corporeal form. Ahmanet however is caught by her father's priests and condemned to be mummified alive for eternity. Ahmanet's tomb is buried and submerged into a pool of mercury so that even her demonic spirit can't escape. In the present day, Nick Morton (Cruise) and Chris Vail (Johnson) get more than they bargained for when they accidentally unleash her sarcophagus, waking up the monstrous form.

Unfortunately, this is a very disappointing start to the Dark Universe. The storyline has been very poorly executed and terribly written. The story is really lacking in excitement and suspense. The character development has absolutely nothing to do with the plot. It really lacks in humour, tension and conflict. The character development is about as wooden as a witch's broom. Tom Cruise delivers one of his worst performances as Sgt Nick Morton, Cruise seriously lacks in characterisation and emotion, his performance is just messy and embarrassing. Russell Crowe's character, Henry Jekyll sadly is not explained properly, although we can assume that it is a subtle link to Jekyll and Hyde that will be released in the near future, as part of the Dark Universe? Sofia Boutella not only looks the part but delivers a decent amount of characterisation to her role as Princess Ahmanet, brilliantly cast, she takes on her role in full stride!

Set in and around London, the set location is inaccurate for the storyline and seems more of a staple than part of the storyline. One moment they're flying over Iraq, a couple of hours later their plane crash lands in London? Just how close together do they think these countries are? The idea that they find an Egyptian princess in Iraq too, is ludacris. Although some of the special effects used in the film are impressive, the cinematography really lets it down. Unfortunately its one of those films where the trailer attempts to show the best bits, however when it actually comes to viewing the movie you realise they are the only good bits! The beginning of the Dark Universe was let down by poor directing an awful script and a soundtrack that does absolutely nothing for the film. Terribly disappointing.

Narcissistic and powerful god Thor is banished from Asgard and made to live among humans, where he soon becomes one of their biggest defenders.

Based on the comic book character of the same name by Stan Lee. The character of "Thor" originally debuted in 1962, in the issue Journey into Mystery. This is the fourth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the first film to feature Thor as a starring character. When narcissistic and arrogant Thor (Hemsworth) threatens to send Asgard to war with the frost giants of Jotunheim, his father Odin (Hopkins) banishes him to Earth to live among humans. On his arrival to Earth, Thor is met by three astronomers Jane (Portman) Erik (Skarsgard) and Darcy (Jennings), Thor must do everything he can to win back his hammer and be a worthy successor to the throne, his brother Loki however has his own plans set in motion to become king.

The best thing about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is that things don't have to make sense, they don't have to be believable. The idea that superheroes could live among us is an exciting prospect, although to most of us, it is simply a marvelous piece of magic presented in the form of comic books, series and films. Although Thor is thought to be a piece of Greek Mythology, he is now part of the Superhero clan known as The Avengers. The idea that Thor's hammer is now stuck on Earth, leaves room for humans to re enact "The Sword in the Stone", in the hope that they can pull it from the ground. Thor of course, is the only one who can claim it, brilliantly played by Chris Hemsworth. A selfish and ruthless man that soon comes to learn respect on Earth. Hemsworth not only looks the part physically but shows deep emotion in his frustration towards his brother and his father.

Loki is performed terrifically by Tom Hiddleston. Unlike his brother, Loki has more of a mischievous personality, tricking those around him into believing that he is worthy enough to become king. Loki has a very dark side to him. Hemsworth and himself work brilliantly on screen together, no one can see through him, not even his father. Hiddleston shows the perfect balance of emotionless and exasperating quality. Natalie Portman is still yet to prove herself to me with her acting ability, however she delivers a pretty good performance as astronomer Jane Foster. The friendship and relationship that blossoms between herself and Thor is excellent, sadly though Portman lacks a deep amount of emotion. Thor learns to love when he is with her.  It would have been nice to have seen a little bit more screen time from sensation Anthony Hopkins, sadly we don't see much of his character.

The special effects are excellent, however I do think CGI has been used one too many times, there's nothing particularly original about the production design. That being said, director Kenneth Branagh and the special effects team have created a stunning backdrop for Asgard, it's creative, imaginative and looks like it could really be another planet. Beautifully shot, Branagh has managed to capture Mexico in all it's glory with beautiful shots of the sun coming through in particular scenes. It's different and it looks really fantastic on screen. Unfortunately the score doesn't do a lot for the film or the story, it doesn't thrill, nor does it add a sense of excitement to the storyline. Very entertaining, but sadly one of Marvel's worst.

Beautifully written, the storyline will capture the imaginations of children and adults everywhere. The story focuses on the importance of reaching for our dreams, persevering with our gifts, our talents. The importance of friendship and kindness. Elle Fanning delivers a charming and heartwarming performance as wannabe dancer Felicie, her soft and delicate voice works beautifully alongside her character and the animation. Together with her friend Victor they head to the stunning city of Paris. Felicie's best friend Victor, played fantastically by Dane Dehaan really teaches us the importance of friendship and trust. The storyline beautifully focuses on the romance and elegance of Paris.

On her journey through Paris, Felicie finds herself in the loving arms of servant Odette, performed brilliantly by singer Carly Rae Jepsen. The sense of mystery that surrounds her character is excellent, was she too once a world famous dancer? The storyline really focuses on a mixture of emotions, love, jealousy, hatred, friendship, kindness and integrity. The animation is gorgeous and really captures the true beauty of Paris. It is believed that the film is set in 1887, due to the incredible landmark of the Eiffel Tower being built, that is shown terrifically through stunning animation. Fantastically educational, suitable for children for all ages. Absolutely magical. A film that is most certain to bring a tear to your eye.

San Andreas

Director: Brad Peyton

Release Date: 2015

Running Time: 1hr 54 minutes

Genre: Action

Rating: 12

Format: Amazon Prime UK

Synopsis:

When a catastrophic earthquake hits California, a rescue pilot embarks on a dangerous journey with his ex-wife across state in order to save his daughter.

Disaster movies over the years have come to be very popular with the likes of "The Day after Tomorrow" and the recent "Geostorm", however when it comes to disaster films, San Andreas isn't necessarily that non-naturalistic. There have been five major earthquakes on the San Andreas fault in the past 300 years or so. Although the magnitude for an earthquake on this level is practically impossible, some of the components to this film are very realistic. Rescue pilot Raymond Gaines learns that his daughter is in San Francisco when a catastrophic earthquake hits California, creating a magnitude of aftershocks, destroying everything in it's path, after rescuing his wife he sets off in search of his daughter to be reunited.

The problem with disaster movies is finding the perfect balance of realism and extravaganza. Unfortunately too many directors focus on the latter. Sadly, the problem with the storyline is the poor excuse for character development. You can practically feel yourself predicting what's going to happen next, moments that are so silly it's embarrassing. Starring Dwayne Johnson as Raymond Gaines, a rescue pilot who finds himself in the heart of the quake when he attempts to save his daughter. Dwayne delivers a good performance, his characterisation is very genuine and believable, hurt at the idea of his wife moving in with another man, his friendship with her is very strained.

Emma Gaines is played by the ever so beautiful Carla Gugino. Emma is now living with rich and selfish architect Daniel Riddick (Gruffudd) who has taken Emma's daughter Blake under his wing, taking her to San Francisco, whilst he's on a business trip. Gruffudd's character is your typical selfish bad guy who puts himself before others, a very different turn of role for Ioan who is normally well known for playing the good guy. Sadly Gruffudd's character Daniel doesn't offer a lot to the movie, there wasn't a greal deal of depth to his character, Gruffudd failing miserably to deliver a little bit of characterisation to his role.

Seismologist Dr Lawrence Hayes tried to convince California a long time ago that earthquakes were going to get more and more frequent. Hayes is performed terrifically by sensation Paul Giamatti. Sadly, one of the only actors throughout the entire movie to generally show emotion in his face and deliver a very heartfelt and genuine performance. Hayes knows when and where the aftershocks are going to hit and does everything he can to warn those outside of California. Although the acting in the film isn't spectacular, it's the storyline that really lets the movie down, it's very predictable and for the most part cliched.

The special effects are dramatically over the top, however they don't really create a thrilling atmosphere on screen. One of the things that was miraculously impressive about the story was the fact that all of the actors did their own stunts, that really is Dwayne Johnson you can see dangling from a helicopter during the opening shot. It's a shame that the special effects looked so poor considering the strengths the cinematography was able to create. Stunning shots of the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Nevada. Unfortunately the special effects too, became too predictable, leaving no space for surprise.

Director Brad Peyton really had the potential to make this film a deep thriller, sadly it ended up looking like a cheesy B movie.

Oz The Great and Powerful

Cast: James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams, Zach Braff, Bill Cobbs and Joey King.

Director: Sam Raimi

Release Date: 2013

Running Time: 2hrs 10 minutes

Genre: Fantasy

Rating: PG

Format: Blu-Ray

Synopsis:

A circus magician from Kansas is transported to the magical world of Oz, where he has a prophecy to become their king and release all of Oz from the Wicked Witch.

It's astonishing to believe that Victor Fleming's beautiful musical "The Wizard of Oz" was released seventy-four years ago. In 2013, director Sam Raimi brought us the anticipated prequel to one of the most beloved musicals of all time. The beauty of L. Frank Baum's original stories was the fact that he wrote more than one, leaving room for a fair amount of creative ideas when it came to filmmakers. In this charming prequel set in 1905, Oz is not yet powerful, but a circus magician struggling to make ends meet, after a very unsuccessful magic show, Oscar Diggs (Franco) finds himself in the heart of a catastrophic tornado, blown away to the land of Oz. Upon his arrival the townsfolk believe him to be the wizard they were all told about in an ancient prophecy. The wizard that has come to save them from the evil Wicked Witch of the west.

Director Sam Raimi has taken the enchanting magic from the original film, putting his own modern twist on it. The familiar faces of Kansas also make their way over to Oz too. James Franco stars as the ever so charming circus magician Oscar Diggs, Oscar spends most of his days, fooling the local townsfolk into believing his magic is real, however upon his arrival to Oz, he learns that the late King of Oz predicted his arrival. Franco delivers a tremendous amount of humour to his role, zany facial expressions that speak volumes without him even needing to talk. Oz is a wondrous land full of enchanting creatures, munchkins and China villages. Upon arriving in Oz, Oscar meets the good witch Theodora, performed beautifully by Mila Kunis. Is she all good though?

Theodora however, is not the only witch, her sister also is a good witch, Evanora performed terrifically by Rachel Weisz. Although Weisz doesn't offer a lot of characterisation, her character is full of surprises. As Oscar embarks on a journey to find the Wicked Witch of the west to kill her, he stumbles across a gorgeous China girl. Scared and alone, Oscar takes her under his wing. China girl is played fantastically by young child actress Joey King. Although the monkeys in the first film were thought of as the Wicked Witch's evil minions. A monkey called Frank latches himself onto Oscar, as he too searches for the witch. Brilliantly over the top, Zack Braff is hilariously funny in his antics.

A magnificent storyline written by Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire. Wonderfully entertaining and easy for children of all ages to understand. Although a prequel, the storyline has plenty of references to the original musical. The fact that director Sam Raimi has taken the theme from the original film and put a modern twist on it is absolutely fantastic. Disney too made sure to have their own references in the film, if you have children it's always fun to look out for hidden easter eggs. Be sure to look out for a reference to Snow White throughout the movie! The storyline is left very open at the end, making you crave more! The  best stories are the ones where you get so lost in it that you not only believe it's real but you don't want it to end.

Raimi has certainly taken a unique approach when it comes to directing the film, his choice for using  sepia tone in the opening of the film was a superb idea, not only is it a unique approach to a very modern film, it also brings back the originality of the musical. The magic unfolds as the film turns into widescreen. Beautifully shot, with stunning use of CGI and green screen. Unfortunately the use of a green screen can be overused, actors are unable to work with a real production design and don't have as much creative freedom, however, Raimi's choice to have physical sets formed the perfect balance of physicality and creativity when it came to the actors performing, allowing them to give a more genuine and heartfelt performance.

Wonderfully entertaining.
