Synopsis:

Carmen and Juni Cortez have their life turned upside down when they learn their parents are secret agents! After finding their parents have been captured, Juni and Carmen must find a way to save them before it's too late.

This movie brings back a bit of nostalgia. I can remember going with friends to see it at our local cinema when it was released. For those, that weren't allowed to watch James Bond, this was the next best thing! O.S.S Secret Agent Donovan has thought to have been captured by notorious Fegan Floop (Alan Cumming), secret agents Ingrid and Gregorio Cortez are sent to retrieve him, when they too find themselves in danger. After their disappearance, their children Carmen and Juni learn of their special skills and set out to save them, before it's too late! I'm sure it sounds awfully ridiculous, I would however like to point out it's a family film! Please, don't watch it expecting James Bond!

Directed by Robert Rodriguez, starring Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino. There's something really wonderful about Banderas's performance. A very natural and gorgeous Spanish accent, a charming personality, he fits the role of a secret agent beautifully! His charming wife, played by actress Carla Gugino. An actress, I wasn't honestly that familiar with when I first watched the movie. Gugino has certainly made a name for herself since. The chemistry on screen between Gugino and Banderas is excellent! Two charming personalities that work fantastically together. I love the uncanny resemblance between their children Juni and Carmen, played by Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara. Vega delivers the best performance out of the two, however they do work brilliantly together on screen as brother and sister.

Although the storyline doesn't sound particularly original, it's very inventive. Director Robert Rodriguez manged to find the perfect balance of action, drama and fun, without making it too grown up for his audience. Alan Cumming delivers a magnificent performance as bad guy Fegan Floop! The owner of a kids TV show Floop Flooply's, Fegan desperately searches for something to improve his show! Turning secret agents into mutants. The one actor that honestly took me by surprise the most was "Terminator" star Robert Patrick! How does one go from making a movie like "Terminator" alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger to starring in a cheap spy flick? Patrick's character is somewhat of a moron.

Unlike most directors, Rodriguez remarkably directed, produced, wrote, edited and scored the film. Considering the films initial success, it's very impressive! Visually, it's starting to look a little bit dated, but for the time in which it was produced, it looked very good! The production design is very creative and imaginative! I particularly love the spy inventions created by Machete. Gumballs that electrocute, the world's smallest camera's, spy glasses and much, much more! I'd imagine it's every secret agents dream? You know, if your a child? The special effects aren't amazing, however considering the type of movie that it is and when it was made, it looks pretty awesome! It adds to the tone of the film perfectly, you honestly wouldn't expect anything else. To expect anything more would be pretentious.

A great family film suitable for all ages!

4/5 stars!
