Film Question Tag

1. Favourite film of all time? It's got to be The Addams Family, it's very nostalgic for me. I loved it as a child, I love it even more as an adult. I very recently saw it live on stage, it was absolutely incredible. I'd highly recommend watching it on Blu-Ray, it's stunning.

2. Favourite scene from this film? The Addams's are forced to leave their home, they end up in a motel. Thing comes to the rescue when he learns Fester is in danger. Thing of course can't speak, his only way of communicating? Through Morse code, with a spoon that was in Gomez's breakfast. It's absolutely hilarious watching Gomez trying to break the code down. One line in particular is marvellous, "Slow down, I hate it when you stutter", it's so fantastically funny.

3. Favourite action film? There are so many. Right now I am really loving Man of Steel. Beautifully shot with an incredible score.

4. Favourite thriller? Prisoners, starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, honestly, the best thriller I have ever sat down and watched. You'll honestly be on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. Fabulous.

5. Favourite psychological film? I'm not entirely sure that it's a psychological film? The Silence of the Lambs, always gets me thinking, there is so much to Hannibal Lector and how he manages to get into people's minds.

6. Favourite Comedy film? Dumb and Dumber, Jim Carrey is amazing, I laugh my head off every single time.

7. Favourite scene from this film? There is a scene where Harry and Lloyd basically dare one another to eat hot chilli's, whilst they are at a diner, it goes terribly wrong, they both end up using everything on hand to extinguish the pain in their mouth including ketchup and mustard...

8. Favourite horror film? James Wan's Insidious, still to this day my favourite horror movie of all time, the only film to generally terrify me. I didn't watch it in the dark as I stumbled across it on Netflix one afternoon, trust me, even then It petrified me.

9. Favourite animated film? I am really loving Hotel Transylvania right now. I'm more into my Disney's movies if I am honest, but I was so impressed with this when I watched it for the first time that I immediately fell in love with, the second one is just as good. I'm even more excited to know that a third one is currently in production.

10. Favourite short film? Paperman by Disney, it's just beautiful. I actually watched it as part of a trailer for a film at a local cinema. It'll touch your heart, it's gorgeous.

11. Favourite romance film? Ghost. Although it's a thriller, it's beautifully romantic.

12. Favourite biographical film? Saving Mr Banks, it's fascinating. Not a biography as such, but a very interesting and true insight into P.L Travers who wrote Mary Poppins.

13. Favourite Drama film? Hacksaw Ridge. I was so blown away by this film. Mel Gibson has a comeback on the way as a director. I was on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. To think it was based on a true story is even more incredible.

14. Favourite music-themed film? Are we talking musicals? My Fair Lady. Audrey Hepburn is incredible. I'd been wanting to see this for so long, I bought it on Blu-Ray, honestly It was one of the best things I have ever invested in, not knowing what to expect.

15. Favourite Sci Fi Film? Interstellar. I watched it with a friend upon fist viewing, I honestly didn't know what to expect. I was blown away, the soundtrack is phenomenal, the cinematography is stunning. One of the best Sci Fi movies out there.

16. Favourite indie film? X & Y about an extremely clever autistic boy who has an eye for numbers.

17. Top 5 Directors? Christopher Nolan, James Cameron, Steven Spielberg, Mel Gibson and George Lucas.

18. Favourite book adaptions? The Hunger Games series, are fantastic. The Beach by Alex Garland was incredible too. The Shining, although the ending is different, is magnificent. To be honest, I have a lot of books to read that have been made into film adaptions.

19. Worst book adaptions? Enders Game, The Maze Runner, The Scorch Trials and Twilight. The reason behind my dislike is due to the fact that the director left so much out that it may have well have been a completely different story. The Scorch Trials in particular was a real let down in storyline.

20. Favourite old film? Trouble in Store starring the late Norman Wisdom.

21. Favourite film score? At the moment it's Beauty and the Beast. I'm sorry, I can't get enough of it.

28. Films you can't wait to see? Ready player One, I cannot even tell you how excited I am for this. Blade Runner 2049 looks amazing, I am a huge Blade Runner fan. Insidious: Chapter 4, Hotel Transylvania 3, Cruel De Vil, I am extremely curious about.

29. Films you want to see but never got around to watching? Although I watched them a long time ago, I really need to sit down properly and watch Lord of the Rings, The Notebook, all of the X-Men movies.

30. Best tear jerker? Ghost. It makes me cry everytime. It certainly pulls on your heart strings.

31. Remake you wish had never been made? The new Jumanji movie coming out, just why? Why? I honestly don't see the point in remaking such an iconic film with such an iconic actor. There's no need at all.

32. Favourite movie location/setting? The Bahamas. It looks stunning and looks even better on film.

33. Favourite cinematographer? I have so many that I love. It honestly depends on the film and their budget and how far they can go.

34. Most beautiful film (in terms of cinematography)? Inception. Oh my goodness. Visually, what a spectacular film to look at.

35. Film that started your interest in film? I've been into movies for as long as I can remember, but Grease, stands out the most to me. All of the Disney films, A Bug's Life was a firm favourite as a child. I love it.

36. Actor crush? Ben Affleck.

37. Weird actor crush? Harrison Ford in his younger years.

38. Most annoying actor? Will Farrell. I'm sorry, it's nothing personal, it's simply how he comes across on screen. I'm sure he's a lovely gentlemen.

39. Most annoying actress? Eva Mendes.

40. Movies you love that everyone hates? I really enjoyed Batman vs Superman, there were a few things wrong, but for the most part it was very entertaining. I really enjoyed Trainspotting too, which also gets a lot of hate from people.

41. Movies you hate that everyone loves? Twilight, it's cheesy and the acting is very wooden. I'm not a big fan of Shrek 2, 3, 4, they most certainly aren't awful, but they were no where as near as entertaining as the first.

42. Movies that didn't meet your expectations? Enders Game, I was really looking forward to it, I was really let down, in terms of storyline. Again, the same with The Maze Runner series, terrible films that I honestly thought would be excellent. A lot of horror movies, Annabelle, I thought it was gonna be up there with The Conjuring, it was terrible, wasn't impressed.

43. Movies that exceeded your expectations? Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, I wasn't impressed with the film prior, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect with this one, however I was really impressed by it. I am now very excited for the next Star Wars movie and Han Solo, I believe which is also in the works right now?

44. Best cinema experience? I went to see a film called Dreamer starring Dakota Fanning, we all went as a family, my late father was really into horses and had been looking forward to seeing it for ages, it was one of the best experiences I've ever had in a cinema, we were really cheering on the horses come the end of the film, such a heartwarming and beautiful film.

45. Best film you've seen in 3D? Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 2. The first film I have been too in the cinema where the entire audience has applauded and most have appeared to have been crying.

46. Favourite movie character duo? Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels in Dumb and Dumber. They were so fantastically cast in that film.

47. Favourite dance sequence in a movie? The end to the incredible musical Grease. It's such a fun dance sequence.

48. Favourite decade for movies? 90's.

49. Remake you want to be made? They'd have to careful but Flight of the Navigator and Short Circuit. It'd have to be good.

50. Favourite screenplay? The screenplay for Mrs Doubtfire. The dialogue is incredible.

51. Most disturbing movie you have ever seen? Sinister and Sinister 2, never again.

The Gallows

Cast: Reese Mishler, Pfeifer Brown, Ryan Shoos, Cassidy Gilford and Travis Cluf.

Director: Travis Cluf and Chris Lofing

Release Date: 2015

Running Time: 1hr 20 minutes

Genre: Horror

Rating: 15

Format: Amazon Prime UK

Synopsis:

Twenty years have passed since an horrific accident occurred in a small town school play, in order to honour the anniversary, students attempt resurrect the failed show, however they soon discover that some things are better off left alone.

Horror movies that are in found footage style are never a good idea. Set in 1993, during a school production of "The Gallows", something goes terribly wrong when the production design faults. Twenty years later, a bunch of high school students seek to resurrect the play, in remembrance. However, it appears they are not alone.

The performances from each of the actors is shockingly awful. Zero characterisation from any of the characters. It's very disappointing to know that director Travis Cluf and Chris Lofing essentially took ideas from "Paranormal Activity", instead of attempting to be a bit more original with their camera work. The dialogue between characters is exceptionally cheesy and very messy. The actors performances actually appear like they are still in rehearsal. They wouldn't come across as convincing even if they tried. It's not entirely clear what both directors were hoping to achieve with the storyline.

Travis Cluf and Chris Lofing have desperately tried to rely heavily on jump scares, sadly creating no atmosphere whatsoever. It's about as sickening as riding on a roller-coaster, watching one actor constantly run around with a camera. The storyline isn't original and is poorly predictable. Terribly shot, Edd Luka's job as cinematographer was pretty pointless, considering the film is shot in found footage style.

The film would have worked tremendously well if it hadn't been filmed in a found footage style. It's amazing really that filmmakers haven't learnt from past experiences that this style of film does not excite audiences. How did it get a theatrical release? The production design is simple, which considering the budget is fair enough. However, it's really nothing spectacular, the entire film being shot in a school. There a are a few creepy scenes, but nothing that scary to make it a really good horror movie.

A lot of directors forget when it comes to found footage movies that a lack of a good score is going to ruin their film. A score can add a terrific amount of emotion and atmosphere. It can really help to build suspense up in a scene. A poor excuse for a horror movie. Very, very disappointing. Perfect for those that are really into their found footage, otherwise definitely worth giving it a miss.

Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls

Cast: Jim Carrey, Ian McNeice, Simon Callow, Bob Gaunton and Sophie Okonedo.

Director: Steve Oedekerk

Release Date: 1995

Running Time: 1hr 30 minutes

Genre: Comedy

Rating: PG-13

Format: DVD

Synopsis:

Ace Ventura is back once again this time in search of a very rare white bat which is thought to be the sacred animal of an African tribe.

Ace Ventura finds himself in the heart of Africa in search of a rare white bat, thought to be belonging to an African tribe. Ventura has a few suspects, but must enlist in some help from translator Fulton Greenwall (McNiece), to help find the culprit. The adventure that follows is absolutely superb! Steve Oedekerk directs the sequel starring Jim Carrey and Ian McNiece. Rumour has it, Carrey wasn't so keen to make a sequel, despite the success of the first film. Carrey didn't like the idea that his character didn't like bats despite loving all animals in the first film. He was also nervous about the way the Native characters were shown, that people make take offence to it.

Director Steve Oedekerk was very clever with his direction in making sure the Native characters were not shown in the wrong light. The humour is very tongue in cheek and shouldn't be taken too seriously. Jim Carrey is absolutely fabulous as Ace Ventura, delivering a highly entertaining and humorous performance. The chemistry on screen between Carrey and McNiece is hilarious, they bounce off each other beautifully. It's remarkable McNiece was able to keep a straight face through out filming.

Simon Callow plays bad guy Vincent Cadby, thought to be the suspect behind the bat's disappearance. Callow delivers a very good performance, sinister and completely up his own backside he certainly gives the impression that he could be behind the bat's disappearance. The dialogue between characters is even more tremendous then the first, especially with Ventura's witty one-liners. For someone who is meant to love animals, director Steve Odekerk has certainly made Ventura out to be somewhat of a wimp in terms of his experience with animals.

Speaking of animals, the wildlife through out the movie is gorgeous. Every animal that you can think of that is native to Africa was shown on screen at some point. Perfect for a pet detective. Despite Ventura's flamboyant personality, he's a very clever man, if you pay close attention there is an awful lot of science behind his reasoning. Visually a very nice looking film, shot fantastically, with gorgeous close ups of Ace Ventura at work.

An interesting soundtrack from a mixture of artists that works surprisingly well. It creates a fun atmosphere on screen, Sting's "Spirts in a material world" works particularly well during the end credits. Magnificently funny, a movie that the whole family can enjoy!

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

Cast: Jim Carrey, Courtney Cox, Sean Young, Tone Loc and Troy Evans.

Director: Tom Shadyac

Release Date: 1994

Running Time: 1hr 25 minutes

Genre: Comedy

Rating: 12

Format: DVD

Synopsis:

A witty detective specialising in animals, goes in search of the missing mascot Snowflake from the Miami Dolphins.

Ace Ventura (Carrey) is on a mission to find a rare albino dove when he learns Snowflake the Miami Dolphin's mascot has gone missing. Ventura teams up with Melissa Robinson (Cox) to help him. Will his lists of suspects lead him to the right person, or is the suspect a lot closer then first appears? The film that essentially made Jim Carrey famous! Director Tom Shadyac also went on to direct "Liar Liar" and "Bruce Almighty" also starring Jim Carrey.

Jim Carrey delivers one of his best performances as the ever so goofy Ace Ventura. Disliked by his colleagues for his unorthodox approach to his work. Jim Carrey presents his hilarious act from his stand up show to his performance on screen. Carrey shows a terrific amount of characterisation and humour delivering a fantastically funny performance. Courtney Cox is excellent as Ventura's sidekick Melissa Robinson. Very different from her "Friends" performance, Cox proves she's more then capable of being the leading lady.

Sean Young is brilliant as Lt Lois Einhorn. Mysterious and ferocious. Dominant and overpowering over Ace Ventura. Ventura is fearless. Although a comedy, it's quite dark in places and full of language. There is a perfect balance of drama and comedy. A real sense of mystery behind the disappearance of Snowflake. The storyline doesn't actually focus on the dolphin, but more a footballer Ray Finkle who has thought of have stolen the dolphin.

The storyline is hilariously funny, extremely well written by Jack Bernstein. Fantastically cast and very well thought out. The film really would be nothing without Jim Carrey. Delivering his dialogue so brilliantly. There is a smashing twist come the end of the film, that will take most by surprise. Ventura's gorgeous Capuchin monkey makes an appearance.

Visually a standard looking film, there's nothing particularly spectacular about the cinematography. It is, however very nicely shot. Ace's apartment matches that of his personality very nicely. The humour is extremely tongue in cheek. The film comes with a very fun and entertaining score with the likes of Aerosmith, Cannibal Corpse and Boy George. It coincides with the storyline very nicely.

Magnificently funny.

Man of Steel

Cast: Amy Adams, Henry Cavill, Diane Lane, Russell Crowe, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner and Richard Schiff.

Director: Zack Synder

Release Date: 2013

Running Time: 2hrs 23 minutes

Genre: Action

Rating: 12

Format: Blu-Ray

Synopsis:

Clark Kent is the last of his race, now living on Earth he must disguise himself as one of them, despite his remarkable abilities. However he is forced to reveal his identity when Earth is threatened by General Zod and his army, who hope to bring the planet to destruction.

Planet Krypton is doomed for destruction, Jor-El's (Crowe) only son Kal-El is the last of his kind, his father must send him to Earth, so that he can survive. Brought up on Earth as Clark Kent, he must disguise himself as one of them. Keeping his abilities a secret. Kal-El however is forced to reveal his identity when General Zod escapes prison and heads straight for Earth to get revenge on him. Revealing himself as Superman he must be the one to save Earth.

If I am correct this is now the third film adaption of the comic book Superman? Is Henry Cavill a match for the late Christopher Reeves? Yes and no. Cavill however, certainly delivers a far better performance then Brandon Routh did in "Superman Returns", this film essentially goes right back to Clark Kent's routes, showing him as a child. Kent realises he can fly, almost as if by mistake. Coming to terms with the fact that he is Earth's answer to hope. Understanding that his powers can no longer remain a secret.

Henry Cavill is excellent as Clark Kent/Kal-El, he really looks the part with a remarkable looking physique. A man of steel. Amy Adams delivers a very good performance as the ever so curious Lois Lane. It doesn't, however take long for her to find herself in deep water. General Zod did make an appearance in the original "Superman" film. Essentially the two films do overlap one another, director Zack Synder has adjusted the storyline, allowing audiences to see more into Clark Kent's childhood that was not shown in the original film and the reason behind General Zod invading Earth.

General Zod is played magnificently by Michael Shannon. Although a little type cast, he is perfect for the role. Dark and sinister with a deadpan expression. An alien like quality.  Kevin Costner has a small role as Kent's father, his performance is very good, as is Diane Lane's performance as Kent's mother. Very protective of his mother, Kal-El seeks justice for General Zod when his mother is threatened.

Although messy in places, the storyline for the most part is very good. The fact that more of Clark Kent's childhood is shown makes it all the more enjoyable, something that was never shown in the original films. The action sequences are fantastic and for the most part is coherently shot. The special effects are incredible, scenes involving Superman learning that he can fly for the first time are superb, breaking the sound barrier, meaning Superman travels at approximately 700mph at a speed of about 300 metre's per second. It looks very authentic and genuine. Superbly shot.

Stunning cinematography by cinematographer Amir Mokri. Visually, the nicest looking "Superman" film to date. The aerial shots are out of this world, no pun intended! At the end of the day, this should not be compared directly to the original films or the comic book. It's an adaption. Sometimes it's better to see a film for what it is, then what it should be. Composer Hans Zimmer explains the film beautifully through a stunning score. Action packed and full of emotion, it brings the story together wonderfully.

A film worth being a little bit open minded about. Superb.

Maleficent

Cast: Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Sharlto Copley, Lesley Manville, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Sam Riley.

Director: Robert Stromberg

Release Date: 2014

Running Time: 1hr 37 minutes

Genre: Family/Adventure

Rating: PG

Format: Blu-Ray

Synopsis:

An insidious fairy is driven to curse Princess Aurora, only to discover that the Princess may be the one person that can restore peace to their troubled land.

Maleficent is a kind hearted fairy, who lives in a beautiful kingdom, however jealousy sparks on the other side in a kingdom rules by a selfish King. When a human suddenly appears, Maleficent befriends the young boy. The young boy who will go onto be King Stefan. It seemed for a while that all hatred between humans and fairies had been forgotten. As the years went on their friendship turned into much more. On her 16th birthday, Stefan presented Maleficent with true loves kiss. As the years passed, they grew apart from one another, Maleficent became protector of the mores. A now King Stefan seeks to strike down the fairy kingdom. Killing all fairies. King Stefan must be the one to remove Maleficent's wings. So much hatred turns Maleficent into an evil and dark fairy, she seeks justice by cursing Stefan's only child Princess Aurora.

You'd be wrong to go in expecting a live action adaption of Walt Disney's "Sleeping Beauty", it is however loosely based on the story. Starring the ever so beautiful Angelina Jolie as Maleficent. Jolie has a remarkable resemblance to the original character. Fantastically cast in the role. Jolie's characterisation is magnificent. Elle Fanning stars as Princess Aurora. Although not your typical leading lady, she's rather good none the less. The three fairies who look after Princess Aurora, however were rather disappointing. Was it really necessary for the screenwriters to change their names? The personalities of each fairy is a little bit too silly for my liking. The innocence of the original characters has been completely forgotten.

Although the storyline is very good, it is very different to Walt Disney's "Sleeping Beauty", Maleficent wasn't born evil, she's simply out to seek revenge. King Stefan believe it or not is made out to be the bad guy. A sinister and selfish man played excellently by Sharlto Copley. It's very interesting to see King Stefan in a completely different light, as he is very much the good guy in the original animation. There are certainly a few surprises. The relationship between Princess Aurora and Prince Philip is very interesting. All is not what it seems.

Spectacularly stunning, the cinematography is vibrant and magical. The fairy kingdom is colourful and enchanting. King Stefan's castle is dark and sinister very much like his personality. Visually very dark, considering the storyline it adds to the tone of the film very nicely. The score invokes an insidious atmosphere around the storyline. Although not full of action, it's coherently shot and visually looks smashing.

A different take on one of Walt Disney's most beloved films.  Fantastically enchanting.

4/5 stars.

The Jungle Book (2016)

Cast: Bill Murray, Sir Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba, Neel Sethi, Scarlett Johanson, Christopher Walken and Emjay Anthony.

Director: Jon Faverou

Release Date: 2016

Running Time: 1hr 46 minutes

Genre: Family

Rating: PG

Synopsis:

Live action adaptation of one of Walt Disney's most beloved classics The Jungle Book!

Based on the children's book of the same name by Rudyard Kipling. Iron Man director Jon Favreau delivers one of the most stunning live action adaptations to date. Mowgli (Sethi) is forced to flee the jungle when fierce tiger Shere Khan threatens to kill him and the wolf pack that took him in as a baby. On his journey through the jungle he is guided by stubborn black panther Bagheera (Kingsley) and bear Baloo (Murray), however it doesn't take long for other creatures of the jungle to stop him in his path. Was it really necessary to change the storyline just because it is a live action adaptation? Screenwriter Justin Marks has changed a great deal of the storyline. Characters that were originally voiced by male actors are now voiced by female actors and the ending has been adjusted slightly.

Starring newcomer Neel Sethi as fearless man cub Mowgli, Sethi delivers, really quite a remarkable performance considering the special effects he had to work with at the time, in order to convince audiences he was in the jungle. Sethi really used his imagination to his advantage, his performance was fantastically genuine and heartfelt. Scarlett Johansson's performance as Kaa was a little bit disappointing. Kaa was originally quite a humorous character, although Johansson sounds hypnotising in her voice, she sadly doesn't bring any of that humour with her, leaving her no real room for characterisation or character development. Bill Murray is excellent as the funny and charming black bear Baloo. Murray suits the personality of Baloo brilliantly, really bringing the character to life.

Talented actor Idris Elba was beautifully cast as the bone chilling tiger Shere Khan. Elba offers a terrifying performance. It's very easy to forget how dark the story really is. Elba really emphasises that in his voicework for the character. Unfortunately not all actors were fantastically cast. Christopher Walken is a truly talented actor, however he was not right for the role of King Louis, Walken's singing performance really lets the character down. Is King Louis supposed to sound like a gangster, or have I misinterpreted something? Walt Disney made quite an impact on his audience when he produced the original in 1967. King Louis was seen as more of a mischievous character that unfortunately we didn't get to see in the live adaptation.

The CGI is absolutely outstanding. It's clear a lot of hard work went into the cinematography and the special effects. The animals were not only motion captured but live on set puppeteers from the Jim Henson company performed live on set too. The animals look remarkably real. The animals were created with key frame computer animation. The use of special effects and animations are what really make this film stand out from other Disney film adaptations. Original songs from Walt Disney's "The Jungle Book" were recycled for this adaptation, including the opening theme. It's a shame the soundtrack isn't as enchanting as the original animation. Director Jon Favreau proved he wanted to make it his own, creating more of a dark atmosphere on screen. Stunning and entertaining.

Hotel Transylvania 2

Cast: Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, Andy Samberg, Kevin James, Steve Buscemi, David Spade and Keegan-Michael Key.

Director: Genndy Tartokovksy

Release Date: 2015

Running Time: 1hr 29 minutes

Genre: Animated

Rating: U

Synopsis:

Count Dracula is now a grand-father, Dracula and his friends do all they can to bring out the monster in his half human, half vampire grandson in order to keep Mavis from leaving the hotel.

Hotel Transylvania is more of a relaxed environment now, opening it's doors to humans too. Count Dracula is now a grand-father, however he's a little worried his gorgeous half human, half vampire grandson Dennis is showing no signs of being a vampire. Whilst Mavis and Johnny are off vising the in-laws, Dracula decides to put Dennis through vampire bootcamp in the hope he will show signs of becoming a one especially as his dad Vlad is visiting and finds out that Dennis is not a pure blood. Now that Mavis has a little boy, she's become somewhat overprotective, baby proofing everything.

Starring Adam Sandler and Selena Gomez as Count Dracula and Marvis. Both delivers excellent performances. Marvis is now stepping into her father's shoes, understanding what it means to be a parent. Dennis is the spitting image of Johnny, Count is having a very hard time accepting the fact that Dennis doesn't show any signs of becoming a vampire. Johnny's surfer-dude personality is fantastic, Andy Samberg delivers a great performance. This time Johnny introduces his wife Mavis to his family, introducing her to the real world. It seems Dracula's monster friends have forgotten how to be...well monsters. Holy rabies!

The storyline is brilliant, just as good as the first one, if not better. It has however, been modernised rather a bit in comparison to the first film. Iphones, selfies, Facebook and Sat Nav's are now part of their lives. Does it ruin the storyline? No. It works beautifully with the humour in the story. It's exaggerated, making it more humorous. The humour is very tongue in cheek and easy for children of all ages to understand. Although not set at Halloween, both films are excellent for the holiday season.

Asher Blinkoff who plays little Dennis is superb. His character progresses beautifully through out the story. Does he become a vampire in the end? I'm afraid you're just going to have to watch it. The story takes a few twists and turns, despite being a comedy, it's dark compared to the first film. The introduction to bad guys was a great idea. It balances the story out nicely. Fifth Harmony's song "I'm in love with a monster" coincides with the storyline brilliantly. A highly entertaining film suitable for all ages. An absolute must have for Halloween.

Hotel Transylvania

Cast: Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, Kevin James, Fran Deshner, Steve Buscemi, Andy Samberg and David Spade.

Director: Genndy Tartakovsky

Release Date: 2012

Running Time: 1hr 31 minutes

Genre: Animation

Rating: U

Format: Netflix UK

Synopsis:

Count Dracula owns a high-end hotel away from humans. He goes into overprotective mode on the night of his daughter's 118th birthday when she sets eyes on a human teenage boy.

Count Dracula (Sandler) built Hotel Transylvania when his wife was killed by humans. Now his daughter Mavis (Gomez) can be safe forever. However things soon change on the night of her 118th birthday when a teenage boy stumbles across the hotel. Before long Mavis only has eyes for teenage boy Johnathan. When narrowing it down to suitable Halloween films for children, this is certainly one of the best. Starring Adam Sandler as Count Dracula, Sandler's voice work is absolutely superb. His accent as Dracula is magnificent, hilariously genuine. Selena Gomez stars as Count's daughter Mavis, an extrovert who desperately wants to see what the world has to offer. Is it as amazing as she imagines it to be though?

David Spade stars as the invisible man, his characterisation is excellent, the comedian of the group. Kevin James is terrific as Frankenstein. Steve Buscemi is fantastic as Wayne a wolf with hundreds of babies. Of course we can't forget the only human in the movie Johnathan, performed wonderfully by Andy Samberg. Unlike most humans who'd probably be frightened to be in a hotel full of monsters, Johnny is all for it. The dialogue between Sandler and Samberg is hilariously funny. The comic timing is brilliant. The storyline is magnificent. An animation that manages to be dark, funny and heartwarming all at the same time.

Directorial film debut of Genndy Tartakovsky. Beautifully written by Peter Baynham and Robert Smigel. The animation is absolutely stunning, it's no surprise that it was the 19th highest grossing film of 2012. It's creative and full of fun. The uncanny resemblance between the characters and the actors in real life is fabulous. The characters look all the more genuine. Imagine monsters living in a modern world. The balance between the modern world and theirs is terrific. Tartakovsky was magnificent in making it fun without going over the top, having no reference to Facebook or Youtube in the film.

Heartwarming and full of fun, an excellent film for Halloween. Suitable for all ages.

The smurfs are preparing for the blue moon festival, when Clumsy accidentally lets evil wizard Gargamel into their village, forcing them through a portal that takes them to New York City. Their only way home is to wait for another blue moon. The mischief and mayhem that soon tumbles around them is hilariously funny. The smurfs do what most people would do if they went to New York, they go sightseeing. On their travels they meet Patrick Winslow who works for a big make up company Anjelou.

Winslow is performed excellently by Neil Patrick Harris. Patrick and his wife Grace (Mays) are expecting a little bundle of joy themselves. Winslow must meet deadlines on a new design for Anjelou before it's too late. Of course "The Smurfs" wouldn't be complete without the evil wizard Gargamel played beautifully by Hank Azaria. Azaria really captures the characteristics of the cartoon character. Evil, fantastically hilarious and absolutely ridiculous. The smurfs are fabulous. Performed perfectly by Katy Perry, Paul Reubens, George Lopez, Fred Armisen and Anton Yelchin. Katy Perry came as quite a surprise as Smurfette. Perry's proved that she is just as capable at performing excellent voice work as much as she is at singing. Smurfette is wonderfully entertaining. Clumsy is a firm favourite though.

Sofia Vargara is highly entertaining as Patrick's boss Odile Anjelou. Posh and snotty, she's every employee's worst nightmare. Although her character is excellent, it does pull the story away from it's original magical storyline a little bit. Anjelou and Gargamel end up becoming acquaintances. It's ever so slightly irritating. It was quite shocking to know that it took four writers to come up with the storyline. It is however a nice modern take on the original cartoon series created by Payo. The smurfs look magnificent. The animation is stunning. Although modern, beautifully designed to look like their original characters. The storyline is magnificently entertaining and fun.

The cinematography is superb alongside the stunning animation. Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays worked fantastically considering they were only given dots to represent where the Smurfs would appear on screen. Their reactions are really genuine and convincing. The dialogue between each Smurf is very funny, especially when they put smurf in front of everything they see. Smurftastic. I kissed a Smurf and I liked it. Oh smurf. The humour is terrific. The score is really good, it works very nicely with the storyline and the characters. It's heartwarming and fun. It really speaks volumes as a family film.

Brilliantly entertaining, perfect for all ages.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

Cast: Vera Farmiga, Asa Butterfield, Zac Mattoon O'Brian, Cara Horgan and David Thewlis.

Director: Mark Herman

Release Date: 2008

Running Time: 1hr 34 minutes

Genre: Drama

Rating: 12

Format: Netflix UK

Synopsis:

Bruno, the eight year old son of a Commandant at a German concentration camp, forms a forbidden friendship with a Jewish boy on the otherside.

Based on the novel of the same name by John Boyne. Set in Germany World War two. Bruno's (Butterfield) father is promoted to be a Commandant of a German concentration camp, forcing them to move out of Berlin into the countryside. Bruno, however struggles to make new friends when he wonders along to the concentration camp, along the fence he meets Shmuel, a Jewish boy, a friendship soon forms that becomes forbidden, leading to disastrous consequences. Those that have read the novel, have stated that it is not historically accurate. Can we just pause for a moment and remember that this is just a film based on true events, not a documentary.

The whole premise that Jews were treated so badly during World War two, honestly makes my skin crawl. I can't actually comprehend it. I'm glad things are very different now. Asa Butterfield stars as young Bruno, an actor I've always found to be wise beyond his years. A fantastic child actor, although not so young anymore. Butterfield delivers a very innocent and pure performance. As far as Bruno is concerned, he is being kind with his friendship to Shmuel, completely unaware of how serious the situation really is. Bruno's sister Gretal however, is very aware of what is going on around her, starstruck by the young soldiers who work for her father.

British actor David Thewlis is magnificent as Ralf, a German Commandant. Ruthless and strict. Ralph believes what he is doing is right, much to the dismay of his wife played by "Bates Motel's" Vera Farmiga. As always, Farmiga delivers a great performance, a terrific actress who always shows depths of emotion in her characters. Although the storyline might not necessarily be historically accurate, Historians have stated that children as young as Shmuel would not have been at the camp, it's likely they would of been gassed immediately, as they would of been too young to work. the storyline however, is still exceptionally good and deeply emotional. A film, that most definitely should be shown in History lessons at school.

Although the film is set in Germany, it was filmed in Hungary. It's not accurate in terms of the storyline, however it adds to the tone of the film nicely. Visually a very decent looking movie, with simple production design. The house that Bruno and his family live in is grand and accurate for the time period in which it's set. The score by James Horner adds a lot of emotion to the storyline. Although it's simple, it really adds to the tone of the film. A deeply emotional film that is highly educating and touching.

Power Rangers (2017)

Cast: Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Ludi Lin, Becky G, Bill Hader and Bryon Cranston.

Director: Dean Israelite

Release Date: 2017

Running Time: 2hrs 3 minutes

Genre: Action/Sci Fi

Rating: 12

Synopsis:

Five high school students must learn to harness their supernatural abilities in order to save the world!

Jason is always landing himself in trouble when he makes friends with detention buddy Billy. After attempting to blow up a mine Jason and others find themselves with supernatural abilities. They are the new generation of Power Rangers! They must learn to harness their abilities to save the world from Rita Repulsa. I'll be brutally honest. I didn't have high hopes for this film. So many remakes these days, don't live up to the original movies. I found this to be one of them. It is a reboot of the original series and is not at all related to the movies made twenty years prior. The thing that annoyed me the most wasn't so much the actors, but how ridiculously long it took to show them as Power Rangers! Naturally, you don't want to be shown too much too soon, however at the same time, you shouldn't have to wait almost an hour to be introduced to the main characters properly.

My first impression was that it reminded me a bit too much of the latest instalment of the "Fantastic Four", which also flopped at the box office. I couldn't relate to the characters at all. Writer John Gatins, went into far much detail about the characters themselves, that he almost steered completely away from the original storyline. Scenes of the students sat in detention went into more detail then it really needed too, I found myself getting bored in the first thirty minutes. By all means explain the characters backstory's, but it doesn't need to drag on and on to the point where audiences find themselves bored. I expected to see a Power Rangers movie! So show me a Power Ranger movie!

Dacre Montgomery who plays Jason (Red Ranger) delivers the strongest performance out all the others actors, even then it's not particularly fantastic. I found Naomi Scott's character Kimberly (Pink Ranger), to be incredibly annoying and very cliched. Director Dean Israelite, obviously assumed that everyone in his audience knew who Rita Repulsa was? What about for those that aren't so familiar? Apart from a tiny scene at the beginning, almost nothing was explained about her character. I went in expecting a really fun and action packed film. Sadly what I got was a very boring and dragged out movie. The actors portraying the power rangers really lacked in chemistry and looked a mess on screen together.

Cinematographer Matthew T. Lloyd captured the tone of the film very well, however again it reminded me too much of "The Fantastic Four", although the special effects were very clever in places, it also looked very cheesy and poor. I love that the Power Rangers costumes were upgraded! It suited each characters fantastically! I love the attention to detail that went into Rita Repulsa's character, it's just a shame that her final scene at the end looks so cheesy and messy and outside a "Krispy Kreme" store, seriously? I was so looking forward to hearing the original theme song too, only to hear it played once during the final scene. I think if played a few more times through out the course of the movie, it would have added emphasis to a few scenes, making them all the more exciting.

Perfect for die hard Power Rangers fans, otherwise, I'd give it a miss.

After Earth

Cast: Jaden Smith, Will Smith, Zoe Kravitz, Sophie Okenedo and Glenn Morshower

Director: M Night. Shyamalen

Release Date: 2013

Running Time: 1hr 40 minutes

Genre: Sci Fi

Rating: 12

Format: Netflix UK

Synopsis:

Father Cypher and son Kitai Raige find themselves stranded on Earth, a thousand years after events forced all human life to escape!

Set in 3071, Earth was evacuated a thousand years ago, after humanity destroyed it. Humanity was taken to a new home Nova Prime Human Settelment! General Raige (Will Smith), decides to take son Kitai on a mission with him for a bit of bonding time, however their craft is hit by an asteroid storm, they soon find themselves stranded on Earth, they must go in search of their rescue beacon in the hope of returning home! Director M Night. Shyamalen has directed smash hit movies in the past including "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs", if I am honest, I'm not entirely sure what he was thinking when he directed this film? Considering the fact that Shyamalen writes most of his movies, makes them all the more impressive! I'm sorry to say that this is by far the worst film he's ever written!

M Night. Shyamalen clearly had a few bad years when it came to directing movies, with his movie "The Last Airbender" flopping miserably at the box office three years prior to this one! A Sci Fi film should be thrilling and exciting! According to Shyamalen, Will Smith was responsible for a lot of the direction on the film, including coaching his son Jaden Smith. Does this explain Jaden's shocking performance? Yes. Where was Shyamalen during the whole of this? I honestly don't know. I do however, get them impression that Will and his son Jaden were left to their own devices on how the movie should turn out.

Despite Shyamalen having a say in the screenplay, he wasn't entirely responsible for the terrible storyline. Writers Gary Whitta and Stephen Gaghan are partly to blame for that. The storyline is shockingly awful. Remarkably boring with absolutely no depth to the plot. Will Smith is a very well respected musician and actor, but this was not the right film for him. I always get the impression that Jaden Smith found work in movies, simply because of his famous mother and father. Perhaps a few lessons at Drama school could do him some good? Zero chemistry between actors. Father and son? In reality, of course, in the movie, are you serious? Neither actor delivers a single ounce of characterisation. Speaking of actors...they are the only actors!

Bad acting often comes from very poor directing. The actors don't understand their characters well enough to deliver a convincing performance. They aren't pushed to the best of their ability. Will Smith's worst performance to date! What makes me laugh the most, is the fact that Kitai is meant to be in search of their rescue beacon in the hope that they can contact their home planet and be rescued? You could have fooled me. There is absolutely no emotion in Will Smith's character. There's no way that you'd ever be able to sympathise with the characters. Clearly something happened to Cypher's daughter, why was that not explained?

The cinematography most certainly isn't at fault, as a digital film it looks very good, however the film really lacks production design. I wasn't convinced it was Earth, it's like watching an episode of "Lost", the props look silly and don't add to the tone of the film at all. The lighting is terrible in a few scenes, it's so dark you can't even see what's supposed to be happening. Although the score isn't excellent, it's not terrible either. It doesn't however work well with the movie. I wasn't convinced for a second that this was a Sci Fi film, the film is seriously lacking in storyline and in action. Will Smith should definitely stick to being in front of the camera, and M Night. Shyamalen most certainly should stick to writing his own screenplays rather then going by what others recommend.

Spy Kids

Cast: Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino, Alexa Vega, Daryl Sabara, Robert Patrick and Danny Trejo.

Director: Robert Rodriguez

Release Date: 2001

Running Time: 1hr 28 minutes

Genre: Adventure/Family

Rating: U

Format: Amazon Prime UK/Netflix UK

Synopsis:

Carmen and Juni Cortez have their life turned upside down when they learn their parents are secret agents! After finding their parents have been captured, Juni and Carmen must find a way to save them before it's too late.

This movie brings back a bit of nostalgia. I can remember going with friends to see it at our local cinema when it was released. For those, that weren't allowed to watch James Bond, this was the next best thing! O.S.S Secret Agent Donovan has thought to have been captured by notorious Fegan Floop (Alan Cumming), secret agents Ingrid and Gregorio Cortez are sent to retrieve him, when they too find themselves in danger. After their disappearance, their children Carmen and Juni learn of their special skills and set out to save them, before it's too late! I'm sure it sounds awfully ridiculous, I would however like to point out it's a family film! Please, don't watch it expecting James Bond!

Directed by Robert Rodriguez, starring Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino. There's something really wonderful about Banderas's performance. A very natural and gorgeous Spanish accent, a charming personality, he fits the role of a secret agent beautifully! His charming wife, played by actress Carla Gugino. An actress, I wasn't honestly that familiar with when I first watched the movie. Gugino has certainly made a name for herself since. The chemistry on screen between Gugino and Banderas is excellent! Two charming personalities that work fantastically together. I love the uncanny resemblance between their children Juni and Carmen, played by Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara. Vega delivers the best performance out of the two, however they do work brilliantly together on screen as brother and sister.

Although the storyline doesn't sound particularly original, it's very inventive. Director Robert Rodriguez manged to find the perfect balance of action, drama and fun, without making it too grown up for his audience. Alan Cumming delivers a magnificent performance as bad guy Fegan Floop! The owner of a kids TV show Floop Flooply's, Fegan desperately searches for something to improve his show! Turning secret agents into mutants. The one actor that honestly took me by surprise the most was "Terminator" star Robert Patrick! How does one go from making a movie like "Terminator" alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger to starring in a cheap spy flick? Patrick's character is somewhat of a moron.

Unlike most directors, Rodriguez remarkably directed, produced, wrote, edited and scored the film. Considering the films initial success, it's very impressive! Visually, it's starting to look a little bit dated, but for the time in which it was produced, it looked very good! The production design is very creative and imaginative! I particularly love the spy inventions created by Machete. Gumballs that electrocute, the world's smallest camera's, spy glasses and much, much more! I'd imagine it's every secret agents dream? You know, if your a child? The special effects aren't amazing, however considering the type of movie that it is and when it was made, it looks pretty awesome! It adds to the tone of the film perfectly, you honestly wouldn't expect anything else. To expect anything more would be pretentious.

A great family film suitable for all ages!

Life

Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson and Hiroyuki Sanada

Director: Daniel Espinosa

Release Date: 2017

Running Time: 1hr 44 minutes

Genre: Sci Fi

Rating: 15

Synopsis:

On board an International Space Station, four scientists discover an alien life form that evolves much quicker then they first anticipated, a life-form that caused all life on Mars to go extinct.

The International Space Station Pilgrim Capsule 7 mission is on it's way back from Mars, when it is suddenly hit by debris, knocking it off course. Whilst the team were on Mars, they took samples of dirt, however what they found was so much more then that! A cell, an alien life-form. A cell, that managed to knock out all life on Mars, millions of years ago! Earth are informed of the life-form, named Calvin! Initially it sounded an awful lot like Ridley Scott's smash hit film Alien. The trailer unfortunately wasn't particularly exciting, audiences were led to believe that the film was shot in POV style very much like the Sci Fi movie "Cloverfield" however it was a pleasant surprise to find the film had been shot in normal format.

This is science fiction and shouldn't be taken too seriously. It was made for entertainment, not for NASA to study and find it's faults. Audiences slammed the movie for it's lack of real science and common sense. If you dive that deep into any science fiction film, chances are you'll never enjoy it. The storyline isn't fantastic, but the idea and the concept are there. The storyline is very self explanatory and to be honest a little bit too predictable. The creature itself however is very different to what you would initially imagine.

The performances of the actors is really quite disappointing, considering the cast we are presented with it is a little bit of an insult. Although the conversations between characters appear quite real and genuine, there is something that just doesn't work, the characters don't explain much about themselves, or who they are. There's a serious lack of characterisation. Why were they on Mars? It would have been nice for director Daniel Espinosa to show their mission to Mars. I can't believe how many references the film makes to "Alien", I'm almost under the impression that writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, took their ideas from it. Gyllenhaal and Reynolds are the only two actors in the film to actually deliver genuine performances. What's more disappointing is that you honestly think the film is going to get exciting, only to find yourself left dissapointed.

Sadly, the cinematography is the most impressive thing, the stunning visuals of space from the space station are fabulous. The production design is very good, it appears quite authentic. Its just a shame, that the entire film takes place inside the space station. The alien creature itself, is very interesting, not at all what I was expecting, it may take some audiences by surprise. Speaking of surprises, there is a big twist at the end of the film! Again though, one of the only good things about the movie! It's a shame the soundtrack had nothing to offer to the film. The score had the potential to create serious suspense in a few scenes and sadly didn't. It's not the worst science fiction film, however it's certainly not one of the best either! Very disappointing and most definitely one of Ryan Reynolds worst films!
